the strangest thing....phantom network

LAst summer I thought I was crazy when I kept picking up this oddly named peer to peer network. The really strange thing was that I would pick it up no matter where I was - even from miles away!

Now I know Im not crazy because it's happening again. This time I keep connecting to "airportthru" peer to peer at 54Mbs. Evrywhere I go - school, home, work, I have full bars. I never, however, receive any packets from it.

Whats going on here? My two room mates are picking it up too, so I know it's not only my computer.

Has anyone ever had anything like this happen before? How can I get rid of it? It automatically connects, and then I have to diconnect it first to connect to what I really want to connect to.

54Mb Huh... Well I hope your not trying to use this card with NS.
.
Check you config, if you are always connecting to the same AP's
then make profiles for them and do this that way. It sounds
like your Card is locking onto the strongest signal automactically,
cause you have the card/client config's as SSID:ANY instead of
what you should be using.

For cripe sakes. That's one of the stupidest things posted lately.
You search on the problem or issue, then go to specifics.
Read how to go about that here:
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Searching the Forums

In your case the issue is a repeating or multiplying "peer to peer" network. (Peer to peer networks are also known as "Ad Hoc" networks.)

There are at least four keywords/keyphrases right there.
