Suggestions for upgrades...

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Sat Pro 6000 running W2KP-SP3 with an internal 802.11b (lucent?) card.

I have had great success with NetStumbler in NYC using this setup, but I want to migrate the machine to Lindows.

I am looking for a few suggestions...

1: Netstumbler may or may not run under Lindows (Lindows supports several Windoze titles already), but if it doesn't, I'd like to hear which comparable linux products are available for the Lucent card built in to the machine.

2: Any thoughts on an external antenna for the Toshiba? I've noticed that the Lucent card has two antenna jacks on the card and the internal antenna is just two small wires that run from the wireless card to a small access panel on the right side of the machine.

Anyone hooked up an external antenna as of yet?

3: If the antenna isn't an option, what 802.11b cards are suggested? I understand the Orionoco Card works well with NS, but I heard that it doesn't support promiscuous mode and thus doesn't work well on Linux. Is this true? Any alternate cards worthwile? My concerns are the cards power and suitability for an external antenna (without major surgery to the card).

Thanks...

Jace

Perhaps this would be better if posted in:

Also you have other threads:

As for the external antenna questions:
Feel free to check out:

As for your theory on ORiNOCO Cards Check here:

... and finally as a PS, search the board next time before posting/ fishing for answers.

Ahh... But I did look in the other forums... The Lindows forum has some loose meaderings about Lindows, but no real meat as to how it runs. Most people who have tried it, haven't reported any useful information back.

Most of what I read about Kismet and Orionoco was vague, or at least my mediocre mind found it so; and I found nothing of value with regard to the question on Toshiba's and external antenna's.

Was it not better to try to concatenate all the questions into one post under a general heading versus trying to pick away at many different forums?

BTW: My only real question now is with regard to the wireless card. Can I modify the Toshiba card for an external antenna (nothing stating anyone has tried this in the antenna section, though I will repost the question there), or should I purchase a different card.

If I purchase a different card, which one best suits the needs of the active stumbler? Most people simply state "I like this one," or "that one sucks." Never giving any qualifying reasons for thier opinions, and thus leaving me more perplexed than I was before.

C'est La Vie...
