Tripmate GPS and NetStumbler
How does one configure the Delorme Tripmate to work with NetStumbler. It is one of the grayed out names under the protocal menu. As I understand it the Tripmate is NEMA compatable once you send ASTRAL on the com port to take the device out of sleep mode. None the less I always get a timeout in NetStumbler.

Did you figure it out?
I live about 10 mles from DeLorme. A former employee of DeLorme gave me an old TripMate. It appears to be working but I have the exact same problem with NetStumber that you do. Did you figure it out? If so send me an email at "jason at chase dot org".
Thanks. Jason |

Delorme GPS units and Netstumbler
No Delorme GPS unti works in Netstumbler yet as best as I have been able to tell.
However, the Garmin E-Trek (or was it E-Trekx I forget now) worked great for me in Netstumbler 0.3.22 and it can be found online for as litte as $110. Personally I would never recommend using any Delorme GPS unit as their GPS units do not store satellite last seen ephermis data on shutdown. This makes the Delorme units take longer to initialize and get situated, and when the GPS is trying to figure out where it is located is one of the highest power using modes of the unit, so your battery life is not very good. -Doc |

Delorme Tripmate WORKS with NetStumbler
I just got my old tripmate working with NetStumbler (old and new version)
You need to modify the Delorme Tripmate to output standard NMEA compatible code. You can do this simply with 2 small wires, and a soldering iron. Follow the instructions here: http://wes.johnston.net/aprs/tripmate.htm I found them last nite, upgraded my tripmate in 10 minutes, and also added a switch so I can turn the unit off and on without pulling it apart. You can still use the tripmate in Street Atlas USA by selecting Standard/generic NMEA from the list of GPS units. Saved me $150 by moifying my old tripmate, vs. buying a new GPS unit just to get the NMEA. Happy Stumblin! |

Earthmate functionality
There is no support inherent in the Eartmate to output NMEA strings. There is a $45 hardware device that will convert the 'Rockwell Binary Protocol' data to NMEA.
There has been some work on software libraries to allow using the Earthmate and other Rockwell Binary GPS hardware with MS-Windows instead of the hardware solution, but this would require linking the shim libraries into Netstumbler. The best solution is to use a 'real' NMEA capable GPS. I'm shopping for one right now, haven't had much luck finding a good price (< $280) on the 'hockey puck' style RS-232 12-channel units. |

Earthmate Functionality
I too would like to get functionality with my Earthmate, I did locate a link where you can download a custom software patch to convert the Earthmate's output to NMEA, although it does its work in a software buffer for use by GPSS software specifically, as I recall. If it helps, email me an I will dig up the link.
At any rate, if the Netstumbler software gods could find it in their interest to interface the GPS' input from that software's output buffer file, maybe there is a match here. Thoughts? |
