Ubiquiti SRC card

I am a little new to this. I have an HP zd8000 (power hogging beast) that came with the Broadcom miniPCI card installed. I am looking for better range for hotspots. Has anyone used the Ubiquiti SRC cardbus 300mW with a 5 dbi antenna? Is this a good choice on cards?

Are their any other cards that are recommended for this purpose? Most of the other cards that I have looked at such as the Orinoco Gold or the Senao are "b" only. The SRC is "a, b, and g"

You say you are looking for better range for hotspots. As compared to? What kind of range do you need?

Well, I am getting poor reception outside the home, low inside the home (within 20 ft of the router). The stats on this card indicate 150 meters or about 500 feet inside and much more outside with no obstructions. I would certainly like to take advantage of the 200-300 feet range with antenna.

I have also seen the the reviews on the Buffalo MIMO card which is nor where near the Ubiquiti, but it would appear that it may also give me additional range at a lot less cost. I am even having trouble hooking up to public wireless spots at my favorite lunctime eateryINSIDE their establishment. It is a little frustrating

Really depends on what your house is made of. My house, which is a slightly modified double wide trailer, one linksys wrt pretty much covers the whole 1.5 acre lot. I added a second wrt to my garage to even out the coverage in there. The signal had to pass through two outside walls that are aluminum sided. Sounds like you may have a bum card. Have you tried a different card to see if that helps?

No, I haven't tried a new card. I would prefer to stay away from replacing the miniPCI that is installed in the laptop. That is why I was looking at the Ubiquiti SRC. I'd rather try the removable cardbus type. My house is frame with real brick exterior. I ma not sure if the brick has any effect or not.

If I went with this SRC card, runing at 300mW, it is probably going to kill my battery time though. I am only getting an hour and half as it is. The laptop has a desktop processor in it and it sucks electricity like a top fuel dragster on methane!!!

Would I be better off replacing the internal miniPCI card with a bettr one? How would I get an external antenna added using an internal card without chopping up my case?

Yes.
Depends on if the internal card is going bad. Still might want to check the connections for the antennas.
Without putting holes in the case, you don't.

OUCH!!! I don't want to start carving up the case. Too much money tied up in this machine for that. Maybe the 32 bit cardbus type would be a better fit and just disable the onboard MiniPCI. Any preferences on the wireless laptop card brands? I like the things the Ubiquiti card offers, but it is definitely pricey. I need one with an external antenna jack.

Beats me on external cards. All my stuff has internal wireless. I only have an express card slot, and I'm not about to spend $200 on a pre-n card.

I have one of the ubiquiti wireless cards you are talking about but I do not use it in a laptop. Although it is a truly great card it was very expensive and I found the external antenna thing a little annoying for everyday use.

If you say :

It sounds like your wireless card could just be a little bunky.Your laptop probably has built in antennas that connect to you current broadcom mini pci wireless card. You will want to check this! If you do have an internal antenna, I would recommend a Wistron CM9 if you are looking for a replacement.

After doing some mod's of antenna's in laptops I've found that many of the antenna's are mounted to the metal support bracket of the LCD. Which of course is not a good idea since the metal has a nasty tendency of interfering with the antenna.

What I did in my Gateway 600YGR was use thin double sided tape to mount the antenna below the metal bracket directly onto the plastic of the lid so the antenna is effectively behind and outside the bracket, and I've been getting excellent reception.

If I can find the time amongst harddrives failing in my servers and handholding the SCADA guys so they don't screw up my plant I'll see if I can take some pictures of it.

Again, if you had hired us you wouldn't have that problem, but it's not your fault , your hands were tied on the issue.
