Usb Orinoco Gold

Hey guys, a friend of mine gave me a wifi adapter he found and couldn't get to work... and it turned out to be a Orinoco gold usb wifi card... I was wondering if there were any livecd that would support natively so I could use it to wardrive... I'm not really informed about the wardriving apps but I know linux... so if anyone can redirect me to a tutorial or some distro that could help me do so.. thanks in advance

Does this thing have an FCC ID?

As this is the Netstumbler Forums, we can tell you that if this is indeed a real Orinoco Gold adaptor then it should be supported Natively in NS, and you don't need a liveCD to run it.

USB orinoco cards are a bit of a pain to get working in monitor mode. You will need to put firmware 6.16, and only 6.16 on it if you want it to work in monitor mode. No other firmware versions will work properly.

I can't confirm until I get home this evening but I'm 99.9% certain I do not have firmware version 6.16 on any of my Orinoco classics. And it was no more difficult to get into monitor mode than my Senao's.

USB or PCMCIA? I know I'm running 8.32 on my cards (TrueMobile 1150 OEMs), but I think the question here was for USB units?

I am talking for a USB version of the Orinoco gold... which is a USB to PCMIA adapter... The only information I found on how to get monitor mode on it is using gentoo (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Orinoco_USB)... and Gentoo is a pain to install, that is why I was wondering if there was any LIVE CD with support for it...

The USB units have the PCMCIA card in them. Unless there were some Classics that were straight USB?

Read the above thread. All of the posts in that thread, pay particular note to any posts by dragorn.

My recommendation : Take out the pcmcia card from the USB adapter, and use the card natively.

USB ORiNOCO's are an abomination and therefore wicked, thy will sure burn in hell, if thy insist on using USB ORiNOCO's with Linux...
