Using a USB GPS

Hello, I was thinking of buying a cheap USB GPS .... I quickly searched your forums and found that I may need to use an emulator?
Is this correct...
ANyways, the one I was looking at has NMEA 0183 output wich apparently works with Netstumbler. But it's usb ... and my notebook doesent have serial ... the other option is a serial to usb converter, which is more of a pain in the rear ...what would you guys reccommend?

Get a USB GPS which uses the PL2303 USB-to-Serial chipset, and presents itself to the operating system through the accompanying driver as a virtual comport.
Among others, the Holux GM210, the BU-303, do that. Check with the vendor.

I bought the relatively inexpensive ($99US) DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-20 and it seems to work OK. I needed to install the free-for-the-downloading serial emulation driver from DeLorme to get NS 0.4.0 to recognize the GPS puck. I have the alternating GPS disconnect that has been discussed elsewhere around here.

It works for me, but YMMV.

Perfect, thanks for the heads up, I have bought a BU-303
Once I plug it in, are there any other needed steps, or is it as simple as that?
I assume I have to specify a COMM port ...?

Thanks, Dutch. Good info. USGlobalSat is offering the BU-303 for $50US+$5USs/h on eBay right now.

If you use it under Windows, the first time you plug it in, Windows will ask for a driver to be installed. That driver allows you to specify what com-port the device should be recognised under. Specify a unused comport there.

Under Linux, the PL2303 driver is part of the kernel drivers, if you have specified USB support. The device will be known as /dev/ttyUSBx, where x can be from 0 and upwards, depending on how many USB serial adapters are installed.

Arrow Here's What I Did

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend and no serial connection on my laptop, so I bought this....

I've never had a problem with it except when I lost the driver disk and repartitioned my notebook to make a dual boot linux/xp b0x. Anyway that's always worked fine for me with Netstumbler and every other GPS Software I've used....
