WAP on an Island
Hi there....I'm new.
But don't worry, i've done my searches and I think I have a general Idea of what I'm talking about. So here's my dilema: This summer I am setting up internet access at this island (its about 2 1/2 acres). Its gonna come in through this provider called SureNet. They provide wireless internet access, with antenna's on cellular towers. They will come and install it at the island. This involves putting a small square antenna on a post, and then providing us with the necessary hardware to convert the signal to ethernet. My idea is to buy a Linksys wireless router and attach an omni antenna to it, so that the signal will reach the laptops anywhere on the island. I made a little diagram....The star represents where the SureNet signal would come in, as well as where the external antenna would be located. My question is, how much gain on the antenna would I need? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Alex ![]() |

It would also depend on if there was anything in the way of your wireless setup. Trees (especially pine trees) would greatly affect the performance of your wireless. You could probably just strap the whole AP to a pole and use some rubber duck antennas. They are like 20 bucks for the pair. Just make sure you place it in a waterproof enclosure. You could do power over ethernet to run the AP too.

15'-20'? Thats a big mast. Tall. Ugly. Is it possible to have it lets say 10' off the ground with maybe a higher gain antenna?
Also, what is the longest antenna cable you can have without losing significant signal? Yeah....there are def some trees too.... Also....what are rubber duck antennas? I've never heard that term... Thanks again... -Alex |

10 feet would probably be high enough if there is nothing in the way. He was probably trying to keep the full Frensel zone. Heck, you already are getting a cell tower.

Go to www.fab-corp.com, click on cisco/linksys, look about half way down for the rubber ducks. They look like the stock ones.

Theres no cell tower on the actual island....Just the original signal comes from line of sight of a cell tower....a couple miles away probably.....then that goes into some sort of router/modem device that then gives us one ethernet feed... -Alex |
