Put a tripod with a 5' mast it on the peak of a roof. That will be 15' up without any problem. What it comes down to, is do you want something that works, or something that's pretty? Don't like masts? Do without WiFi covering the island.

4.5dBi will give you a nice spherical pattern. A higher gain will just make the pattern flatter. Depending on the gain, you're running the risk of being outside the pattern.

That depends on the type of transmission line. With some types it is 1 foot. Other types, and it's 100 feet. Look at the Times Microwave site. They list the loss per foot of all the types of cable they sell.

I think i understand the more gain=flatter theory now too..

As far as the pattern flattening as the gain increases, look in the Antenna FAQs, there are some explainations.
