Greetings,
I am thinking about buying one of these and a matching card... anyone have any opinions about these? http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=22&prid=428 http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=430&grid=22

at least no one will stumbler upon you (for now). so you wont have to worry about security all that much for the time being. I've heard that the 5ghz gear isnt all that its being cracked up to be as far as speed.
If I remember correctly, the only company producing the chipset for them is Aethos (Atheos.. dont remember the EXACT name). so you definitely wont be stumbling with this model for now ![]() The linksys model does advertise some sort of proprietary speed boost that will bump it up to i think, 74mbps, but all the main info is on their site. I for one dont sit on the cutting edge of technology. I stay just one step behind it so that I dont get stuck w/ some FAD hardware. Knowing 'my' luck, I would buy it, and something hellacool would be developed next month making that hardware obsolete and I'd be left with no support for it. But hey, to each his own. ![]() |

From what I've heard about 5Ghz 802.11a, its slightly faster than b, but there are some drawbacks.
Good: Actual throughput is around 20 mbits, compared to about 5 mbits for b (3 to 5 times faster) Very little interference in 5Ghz band. Bad: Less range than an equivalent power b network. (it takes about 2 802.11a access points to cover the equivalent of one b access point) Does not penetrate walls as well as b. Some people say it is not as good as b for Point to Point communications. The Orthagonal multiplexing in a starts to degrade and interfere with itself after a few miles < Not sure if this is true, but I heard it straight from an Intel engineer. |

I'm thinking of getting one of these setups towards the end of the summer to compliment my 802.11b setup. Though, part of the plan is to do some distance testing comparing the WAP11 to the WAP54 for raw distance in an outdoor arena (mall parking lot).Gotta move first, though. ![]()

SMC 802.11a
As I browsed thru the Sunday paper @ work today, I looked upon the CompUSA ad as usual. Saw some SMC Gigabit switchs & gigabit network cards (10/100/1000mbit) and drooled. But, then, next to it on the page was .... low and behold....
The SMC 802.11A access point & card & they were on sale! Just thought you'd be intrested in this blackwave since you were looking @ the 802.11a stuff and I'm sure other users of the board would be intrested too. I almost just made a thread for this, but oh, what the hell. ![]() Link to national circular for compusa: http://www.compusa.com/AdProducts/ad_menu.asp you have a choice of looking @ the ad in html or pdf. I'm posting the direct links for the products below in html. http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...ct_code=289474 :: that's for the access point for the card :: http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...ct_code=289472 enjoy ![]() |

Great Rebates, for around 300 bux one can get a card and ap, where usually the ap alone goes for 300. That is like getting a free 802.11a card! Great Savings. Does anyone have any feedback with the EZ Connect 802.11a Wireless Access Point and PC Card? Damn this week I have bought quite a lot of 802.11b hardware... and this deal only lasts until the 15th... :~(

ok. now BW scares me.
he makes references to cool aid, comets and ATF @ a ranch. this leads me to believe he's in one of those wacked out cults that thinks the aliens are are on some comet heading near earth and if we drink the 'coolaid' (Stricknine), that we get to see the aliens (we end up dying). or.....i just need to put the pipe down and welcome BW back from hybernation. lol, you picked up on my colorful references just fine... one thing I wouldn't do though ( if you join us for 99$USD/day for accepted status, or 1000$USD/day for master status) is tell everyone to lop them off... that is just too creepy.

just got them
i just got both the wap51ab and wpc51ab yesterday and they rock.
a few things stand out. no ip filtering, no utility to see what access points are connected, no way to disable SSID broadcasting, no usb support, 802.11b antenna seems to be weaker, and a few more less important things. if they fix thes things in the next release of the fw, it should be MUCH better just my .02$ |
