wavepoint II

My isp is a wireless connection that has orinoco card inside computer connected to outside ant. I am wanting to add another computer with internet access. I purchased a wavepoint II thinking I could use as a repeater or an access point. I also have a couple extra orinoco cards. Any suggestions or sites to read would be appreciated. I have alot to learn and need a little jump start if anybody has any suggestions, thanks

First check your TOS and EULA to see if you are able to do this. Many WISPs don't allow such add ons. Many monitor for specific cards on their systems. If adding on this equipment is allowed, then talk to the WISP. You are going to need some specific information to get this on the system, and they are the place that has it.

Next, go to Proxim/ORiNOCO's site. You will very likey need to upgrade the firmware on the Wavepoint.

Finally, did you have some plan in mind? A few more details might help determine what you're trying to do, and how to go about it.

I work for an ISP that uses Orinoco equipment and some smartbridge equipment. You could try an Orinoco ethernet converter. Your current card would slide right in. From the EC you could use any router/AP setup you wanted. Fab-Corp.com has the ECs for $199. So your setup would look something like:

Antenna -> Orinoco card in Ethernet converter -> cable/dsl router -> your own AP.

You will want to make sure that the channel your AP would be on does not interfere with the channel your ISP uses. You will also want to set the SSID in the EC to the exact SSID of your ISP's AP. If you leave it set to ANY (default setting) then your EC will most likely connect to your personal AP. If they are using RADIUS for authentication, then you will have to let them know what you are doing. The ECs broadcast the ethernet mac address as apposed to the WLAN mac address. If they are using WEP and entered the key in your machine without telling you, you will need that information as well.

On the other hand......

If you were wanting to use your Wavepoint to do it all, there's a lot of info you need to get from your ISP. Like system access and SNMP passwords, network ID, channels, and IP addresses. I really doubt they would give you those.

If you set one card to ROR slave and the other to AP, you would essentially be turning your house into an access point for your ISP. Talk to your ISP about it. They might like having another node in your neighborhood. Infrastructure costs money. If one of our customers wanted to set up his place as an AP and already owned the equipment, we'd kiss him and give him free internet.

SO, what it all boils down to is just what Thorn said. Talk to your ISP. Tell them what you have and what you would be willing to do with it.

My isp is pretty wide open as I can log on with my personal card and laptop near there towers. When I spoke with them about my wavepointII, he said it would be a month before they could come out. There are family owned and very busy people, good ppl too, but I figure that I was politely blowed off. It is sparsely populated around here so another ap does'nt have any bargaining power.
When I ran the software that came with the wpII, it showed all kinds of info. I just gotta figure out how to make it work now.
As far as my plan, I want to get my daughters computer, main pc, and laptop, for outside by the pool, connected online. I do have a usb/orinoco on the way thinking ad hoc mode. (staples guru never heard of ad hoc) My wavepoint does need firmware upgrade, it's an ebay new-old stock special. I was trying to do the ethernet convertor via my home computer connected to the wpII with a switched cable. No luck but doing some reading. My problem is I am a hands on, trial and error type, who has a rough time comprehending what I read sometimes. This stuff is pretty interesting to me so I enjoy my limited successes so far. Just wish I had more time! Thanks for your replys, I have been reading them a couple times over already!
