Question week signal. ideas???

I hope Im posting this in the right area. Im new to all the wifi stuff. First off I am using a Dell laptop with the internal dell wireless 1390 802.11g minicard. At home I have a linksys wrt54gs ver1 router with speedboost. I also have a usb nic speedboost also by linksys, but when i hooked it up on the laptop I got errors galore and it crashed a few times and never got any connections. Now using my internal card on the laptop I am about 40-50 ft away on the same floor and my signal strenght is week normally 1 bar sometimes 2. If I try to go out into my tiny backyard its only 1 bar ever. Any ways to improve the signal strength? A friend suggested getting a buffalo 54hp card and antenna for my laptop while another suggested a Ubiquiti card. Any input or advice? Thanks a ton for the help.

I would read all the posts in the Welcome Desk first.

Then I would do some searches on how the 2.4gHz radio waves bounce under certain conditions with certain materials.

The search function works on the forum as well as google.

I would ask your friends what in particular about those cards they think is going to help solve your problem.

Why are you threadjacking someone else's thread?

Then go read the Welcome Desk. Then search on Google for "dumbass" and see if your image shows up in the first 10 hits.

It's poor etiquette in pretty much any forum I've been in.

They suggested them because they have external ant. jacks and i guess seeem to have a stronger signal reception (they said filter more noise but im not sure I believe that). They also suggested using a pigtail type ant with my laptop. Thanks
