what AP's work well with an ORINOCO GOLD?
i work @ COMPUSA, so i would prefer an access point that we carry that will work with well an ORINOCO GOLD card....i would like it if it is below $100 also.
I know it doesnt really matter, but not sure if like Netgear, Linksys,etc... or if theres another brand that is cheaper/better....(like the orinoco card itself...$76...and a linksys card is $100 and it sucks...) thanks! |

Any AP that supports 802.11b standard will work fine. There are the Orinoco APs but rather pricey. I just picked up a near free Dlink one (see my post on the hardware forum) and I get real good range on my Dell TrueMobile 1150 which is a rebadge Gold.

if compusa sells the orinoco AP's like the RG's they have the best range. the orinoco RG's are tricky to set up though...no web pages...just SNMP stuff that is kind of cryptic.
most of the other brands like linksys & dlink & netgear are just rebrands of identical h/w (all prism-based). the dlinks work ok as long as you don't have a house w/ radio impenetrable walls like a friend of mine (only orinoco works well in his house). but dlink support sucks check out the reviews at practicallynetworked.com for more info. |

The NetGear AP is pretty good. We've set one up here in the office before and I've had a good strong signal with it and my ORiNOCO silver.
Linc, what about the RG management app?

sorry i was unclear above...i should have said "the cryptic SNMP-based app." i'm referring to AP manager (which you have to download) . what's annoying is some of the fields that it shows aren't even supported by the f/w. the RG management app it's bundled is next to useless unless except for clueless n00bs. it doesn't even let you set an arbitrary SSID. personally i like the SNMP-based stuff better. the ability to to set traps for events lets you monitor your network, and the lack of HTTP-based configuration is a mild deterrent against the casual passerby. |
