What do you think of this set up?

Hi guys. I want to make an antenna to pick up wireless signals from inside my camping van. I have a Buffalo Turbo G WLI-CB-G54HP card with external MC-card jack and built in amplifier. I will clip the antenna on the roof or inside the van, not a permanent mount.

What do you think of this setup...

Pigtail: MC to N connector using 19 inches of LMR-100 cable
Cable: 8 feet of LMR-400 with N connectors
Antenna: 15 inch 9dBi rubber duck with N connector

Shoud I use N connectors or would TNC connectors be better?
The duck antenna is normally used for routers - would my amplified card use it well as an antenna?
This wouldn't be grounded I don't think... how much loss would I get by not having a metal base plate?

Any other tips?

Thanks guys

(stratching head)You want to pick up wireless signals from inside your camping van? Are you talking about being IN the van and picking up wireless signals, or are you LITERALLY talking about picking up wireless signals that are emanating from your van?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most roofs on camping vans metal? So why would it not be grounded?

I think I'm confused.

Hmmmm 4 connectors with what 2db loss each I think? That alone cancels the 9db gain antenna out.
Then add all the loss from the cable runs, I think about 3db being lost there.
Looks like a loseing battle...
Spend the $55 and get a real antenna from FAB Corp. at least it won't suck

I'll be in the van with my laptop, trying to pick up free wireless internet signals the originate from wireless cafes. My van's roof is metal but there wouldn't be direct metal to metal contact with the antenna.

Don't you think the cafe owners would prefer you to use their facilities inside or do you have other plans?

My calculations for my set up are approximately:
+9dBi (rubber duck antenna)
-.6 (LMR-100 pigtail cable)
-.5 (LMR-400 cable)
-.5 (connector)
-.5 (connector)
-.5 (connector)
= approx 6.4 dBi total gain

Are you refering to the $55 "minimag 5 dBi Magnetic Mount Omni Antenna"? I would still have to adjust for losses for that too, correct? Plus I would need a pigtail, correct? Making it more expensive and less effective?

+5 dBi (minimag antenna)
-1.3 (RF-240 cable)
-.6 (LMR-100 pigtail cable)
-.5 (connector)
-.5 (connector)
-.5 (connector)
= approx 1.6 dBi total gain

I would suggest you go out and buy the June 05 edition of "TRailer Life" and see articles on pages 40 and 83
Page 40 will show you satellite setups for internet and page 83 will show you a "Cantenna"

Alot of RV parks offer Wifi for their guests so as long as you are camping within their boundaries you are welcome to use theirs (ie you are paying for the night).

The Cantenna rig the have shows how to pipe a wifi into the camper which is an Airstream (all stainless steel body design, which makes a GREAT ground plane so adding a nice all weather 13-19 db from Fabcorp would be better)

Most campers are either aluminum or FibreGlass with wiring in the walls. Both can hinder the signal.

Not that I want to get banned, especially just before Cajun BBQ weekend, but you two need to get out of my head. I was thinking the same things as I read through the thread.

Sorry Dutch, but it just sounded funny from the beginning.

Damn man, you had to go and ruin the jaw dropper. I was thinking, "Oooh nice! all stainless steel! That bitch has to be expensive but nice!" Alumnium is nice too, defnitedly helps the MPG tho. Stainless steel defnitedly would have been heavier.
