Question Wierd problem

Ok, I'm trying to networks this guy's 3 systems (Dell running 98SE, Sony running XP Home, and a new HP Running XP home) He has the Sony and the Dell in his office upstairs with a Motorola Cable modem plugged into his Belkin Wireless Cable/DSL router (belkin P/N F5D6230-3) Those 2 systems work fine. He's using Belkin USB wireless adaptors (belkin p/n F5D6050) on all 3 systems. I CAN'T get the damn HP to get a signal. I've done EVERYTHING (reloading drivers, switching adaptors, resetting BIOS, resetting router, reloading XP, moving the router downstairs to alleviate any distance problems) to get this to work. THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!!! Any thoughts or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

P.S. Before you tell me to have him get a different WNIC or router....I've already tried that.

Did you try using the wireless card off another machine on the HP to eliminate the possibilty of that one card being bad? Also, in my experience its easier to install the drivers yourself than let Windows do it.

UPDATE!

I swapped out the router and nic on the system from belkin to linksys. The linksys worked for a shork while and now I get no link even if the linksys nic is SITTING ON TOP OF THE ROUTER. The system I'm working on is an HP 501n. does anybody know if there and ANY incompatibilities between the chipset on theat mobo and any wireless networking schtuff?

Actually, I know there is not. I work at a particularly large retail office supply store, and we have both the HP 500 series machines, as well as a functioning Linksys wireless setup which connects a machine on the floor to select parts of the store LAN. I've used the linksys nics on four different machines and have never had a problem using them. One thing I've found though, with the linksys config software, is that sometimes, specifying ANY for the SSID will kind of lock it up, that you actually have to specify the ID. And make sure that infrastructure is specified on both the AP and the client. Other wise, you have me stumped too.

I'm leaning towards bad motherboard at this point. The adaptors install, but can NEVER get a link. No matter what. I've tried all thos things you listed plus resetting the BIOS, and reloading XP. I'm going to get a hold of HP today and see about getting the motherboard replaced.

It does sound possiable that you have a faulty mobo. Or maybe a short circuit or dust build up? Although I would expect this to affect more than just one localised component.

i'd get the mobo swapped. if that doesn't work I find general abuse (both physical and verbal) plus numerous unpluggings either fixes it or creates another problem. Both leave me feeling good.
