wifi card question

Im going to be getting an hp dv9610us laptop today and i know it has the built in wifi but I had a few questions about some cards. First of im going to get an external WD drive to put linux on (knoppix and/or FC6 and/or BackTrack2) Now i know about the orinoco cards and anything with a proxim based chipset is a good road to go for support but here is my question.

1) What seems to be the most widely used and supported card and incase I decide to build an antana or a "cantana" do any of the most widely used and supported cards have the connector already on it?(I dont recall the name of that connector, "N" maybe?)

Thank you all for the help

First off, hopefully your new laptop comes with a fully functional shift key because the one you're currently using appears to be defective.

The most widely used and supported card would be the one that's mentioned in the documentation supplied with NS.

Chose the card based on the software you want to use. Read the documentation for that software to find out what card they recommend. Research the card to find out what options & connections are standard.

Its been a while i thought it was proxim based I could be wrong. I think that proxim is who owns the orinoco line of cards now. Speaking of cards I was just thinking, since 802.11 N is out now is there such a thing like the orinoco gold card that supports b,g, and N ?

Im sorry I just saw now...its not proxim based its prism based cards DUH on me

Nope! Proxim did use a few Intel chips. The Orinoco Classic was Hermes based and I think even a few of those (European versions) were Intel based as well. The new Proxim stuff is mostly Atheros.

I'm pretty sure it's all still Pre-N(Whatever Revision They Are On).

The 802.11n standard is not completed. The only hardware you will find is called "pre-N" or "draft-N". IMHO neither is likely to be compatible with the yet-to-be-decided final N standards.

Insufficient specification for a valid answer.

You are going about it the wrong way.

You first define the task you want the card to accomplish.
Then you research what software can accomplish the task.
Then you research what card(s) that software supports.
Then you purchase that card from a vendor found online, or order it from a local IT hardware supplier.

Most if not all of the guys here who do WiFi related work for a living, carry several cards. And a large percentage of those who do this as a hobby, also carry several cards, and use one or another of them, depending on the program they are running.

Maybe you missed his point, which ONE card would work best for him.

Im just seeing whats out there and not sure where to obtain a card that actualy has a connector on it where as "normal" cards can be had pretty much anywhere.

Untill he specifies what tasks that one card should do, and what software it should do those tasks with, the only thing I can offer to help him is this perl program :

Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
#
use strict;
use LWP::Simple;

my $InsufficientData = 1;
while ($InsufficientData) {
   DisplayForumPost();
   sleep(36000);
}
exit;

sub DisplayForumPost() {
  my $Contents = get("http://www.netstumbler.org/showpost.php?p187541&postcount=11");
  print $Contents "\n";
}

I tried running that but it keeps bringing me back here. Am I using the wrong card? Is there a problem with my connector? Do I need a new keyboard?

Did I ruin it for you?
