I have searched the forums regarding issues with the SMC2532W-B under Windows XP SP2 and I am getting a lot of the same problems as others.
At first the card installed just fine. I had to do some tinkering to get it to work, each time I wanted to use the card with windows network connection I have to enable wireless zero config "smc kept disabling it". I preferred the windows utility over the SMC utility as it seemed faster. But the SMC utility did work. Any how.. Since I didn’t think I needed the SMC utility I remove it and went ahead with just installing the SMC drivers. When I removed the utility/drivers the first time, windows said that some drivers could not be removed at this time, so rather selecting ignore and leaving them in the system32 folder I choose to remove them at the next startup prior to their loading. So I rebooted and installing just the driver for the SMC card. But the card would not function. When I would manually scan with the windows utility it would scan for 1ms then stop. I tried enabling firmware download and all this stuff I have been reading up on but nothing works. I even tried reinstalling the SMC utility, but now at startup it uses 80-100% of the CPU and fails to load. I tried to install the demarc firmware but the utility for updating it doesn’t work/recognize my card on my Windows XP SP2 system. If anyone could give m any pointers (rather than reformatting) or help me install the demarc firmware I would be much appreciative. Until then I shall search the forums even more. Thanks |

Sometimes it's hard to get the utility to run - it hides in the background. Meanwhile, my whole computer is dreadfully slow, with mouse movements stuttered, etc. Forget about trying to get NS working - I just need the card to work. I keep my PC pretty damn clean - high security, clean installs of software, OS. I don't download much, and if I do, it's after thorough research. Device Manager doesn't report any problems. I chose "Firmware Download - Enable", but also tried it Disabled. Same problem. I decided not to risk playing with Demarc or Zomax (sp?) firmware, drivers, or software. Ok - I think I figured it out, after fiddling with it all night. Firstly, I disable the automatic startup of the SMC Utility. I prefer to run it manually. Use a simple Startup Manager tool to change it. (I like SCP at www.mlin.net). When it first runs, it's in "ANY" access point mode - looking for any AP to connect to. This was the problem for me, for whatever strange reason. When it's in "ANY" or (null) mode, I get this whole hanging/freezing problem. Other AP names (whether real AP's such as my router, or made up names) are OK - the software/card behaves normally. How to get out of it? First I used Task Manager to kill the app. Not difficult there. Then, I go into the device properties and change the ESSID from ANY to "dfn39gnkdmm3" - anything else. That seems to set it straight, especially if I use the SSID of my WLAN here at home. Then I run the SMC util and it behaves. Then I set the DEFAULT profile in the SMC util to "sfjk39tmjsf". Even though it doesn't connect to anything, it doesn't hang. I have another profile for my WLAN, and I deleted the profile I used for "ANY". At first I was frustrated that I wouldn't be able to scan for AP's since "ANY" or null hangs everything, but then I tried NS and it seems to scan for all AP's just fine when I select my profile that's "dfkj39u4fjdnfd". Sweet, back in business. Problem seemingly solved for me. Not sure if it'll help you out there. |
