Wireless at an airport
I am attempting to carry an exitsting network over to another building located at an airport. There are two buildings that I am concerned about. The office that I need to relay the wireless network connection to is ~325' away from the access point.
Heres my problem... One half of each building is all metal, but it's the halves of the buildings between my access point and my target location. I attempted to accomplish this with an access point at building 1 and a repeater on the exterior corner of building 2. My coverage was great along the long sides of the buildings, but as soon as I attempted to go into building 2, I lost all signal. I need to find a way around the metallic interference. I was thinking of something like this..... Building 1 Building 2 Internet Connection Router+Omni Antenna AP+Omni Antenna Mounted on side of Mounted on side of bldg. 1 facing bldg. 2 bldg 2. facing bldg 1. Switch (wired to router) 5 clients hardwired to switch That is a rough layout, now i guess some of my options are to run a long cat 6 cable off the bldg 2 ap, and wire everything (which i'd rather not do), or just run all clients wirelessly off of ap in bldg 2. The metal hangar still concerns me.....so another option woluld be to flood the building with repeaters. My budget is $500.00 Any ideas would be greatly appreciated |

I'm having a hard time seeing the layout based on your description, could you post a diagram?
I deployed an AP in our new office which has a steep pitched metal roof. The roof acts like a giant corner reflector and distributes the signal quite well. You might want to try placing the AP in different places. |

Sparafina,
Here is the drawing that may help. I'm not an artist, so don't smack me around too much. My goal is to get a network from office a to office b. When I did my experiment.. When the repeater is plugged into location z, i have coverage throughout the whole parking area located on the left building. When the repeater is plugged into location y, I have coverage throughout the whole passenger area. The repeater is located on the outside of the metal sturcture at both the y and z locations. When I go into the building, the signal degrades substanitally. When I get within 10 feet inside the building, The signal is completely gone. I was thinking of putting omnidirectional antennas on the taxiway side of the Office "B" Building, and on the access road/parking lot corner of the Office "A" Building. The left hand building is taller thatn the right hand building. Office B Building: Run an antenna cable of ~25' to an access point located somewhere on the ceiling of the main lobby. All clients should be able to access wirelessly from there. Any suggesstions would be apprecited. |
