Wireless Cards
I have just dug up a ancient laptop which was buried in my attic for years. Now it seems perfect for Wardriving but i have a few questions:

1) i will need a wireless PCMIA card for it. Now i have read about them and know that Hermes based are a good way to go. However the only cards i can find are 802.11b only. Is it worth looking for a 802.11 b/g card so i can pickup more signals.

2) are "wardriving kits" like these:Link
worth it? They are Orinoco which are recomended but still only B.

802.11b cards will detect 802.11g network just dandy.

Hermes based Orinoco's are the best to use if you're going to use Netstumbler.

Ok thanks for the quick reply.

I don't know much about 802.11 b/g apart from the differing speeds.

However if thats the case why do some manufactures state a card is 802.11 b when they can pickup 802.11 g just as well?

They will detect the G networks just fine, but if the AP is configured to only accept G connections then the B will not connect to it, but it can still detect it.

"b" cards can pick up "g" networks because "b" and "g" use the same frequencies. That concept is wholly independent of the speed capabilities of the card.

Right so to confirm:

B goes on the same freq but at a lower speed than G. So a B card can detect G but not connect.

Now if i was looking to test my home network which runs on G. I need a G card because a B one can only see it. Yes?

A "b" card can detect a "g" network, but cannot connect to a "g-only" network.

If your network is set for both "b/g" your "b" card will work. So unless you have a valid reason to set your network to "g-only", configure it to both "b/g" and your "b" card will work fine.

If your network is set for both "b/g" your "b" card will work.
But remember if you run a Bee and a Gee card in the same machine, you'll end up with a Tragedy, but only if you're wearing really tight jeans.

What would be the point of having a "G" network at home and not having the appropriate wireless adapter to connect to it? What do you mean by "test my home network"?

Its quite simple:

I have;

1 wireless router
1 networked xbox360
1 networked pc
1 networked laptop
1 spare laptop which needs a wireless card

i asked my question because i needed a card for wardriving and the onlys that i could find were B only. My router is set to G only but i will change that. (i didn't know b and g was possible.)

By testing my network i mean essentialy attacking it. Since i own it, its legal.

I have the answer to that question, Google does know all.
