WOKtenna

Ive been working on a parabolic dish antenna design
made from easily available hardware. In this experiment
im tring out a WOK. It doesnt work well gain wise, great
isolation, but the dish is just to deap. It has a poor f/D ratio.
I also need to design a real waveguide. This was more of
a brainstorming endevor, so there are no dimentions.
Feel free to email me if you have any ideas, such as something
shallower for a reflector. Or a feedhorn design that will
illuminate the edges well, center little, and not have signal bleed
outside of the dish.

f=scr(D)/16d
f/D with this thing is .25 at best, which totally sucks.

that's a pretty cool idea you have. if you go to a chinese grocery store they usually have lots of woks of different depths. i've seen pretty shallow ones. most of them are made of carbon steel, though, which rusts if you just get a drop of water on them, but sometimes you can find stainless too.

what are those plastic bits you are using? are they custom? i've never seen parts like that.

A new wok is way to expensive, i got this one for $15
(this is the lid btw) the wok itself has a heating element
and a big flat spot. The radome is made from pvc parts
that i just cut and machined to fit together a certain way.
The feedhorn is just a patch antenna that i designed.
Theres metal tape on the inside of the radome which i was
hopeing would act as a waveguide, but with the focal point
so low i think it just blocked rf.

This is too hilarious. The backfire design from Finland uses a tin baking dish for a reflector. I was fooling around with my g.net omni and I was getting a terrible signal so I used the lid from a room service plate as a groundplane.

If you're looking for inexpensive cookware for experimenting, AceMart is a national restaurant supplier chain that has stores in a lot of cities.

the woks in the chinese groceries go for about $5-$15 new. for stainless, about $20. also, most of them are completely round - no flat spot on the bottom, because they're designed to be mounted on a ring to elevate them.

Funny you should mention that... I'm working on a design that involves one of those kiddie pools, about 200 yards of aluminimum foil and a broom stick... I'm think it might be good for a couple db's

Drum antenna

Anyone heard from the guy in England who was making an antenna out of a 55 gallon steel drum, mounted in the back of a pickup truck?
