Aw, crap! What the hell was I thinking? The magmount goes on the hood of the car, right?

Just kidding, yonu. We do that around here a lot. WarJoking.

Getting back to your question about magmounts, it's just an antenna with a magnet on the bottom, so you can mount it on the car; preferably, the roof. The only magmount I use is an omnidirectional, though there are others, like patch and panel antennas, that can be magmounted as well.

On the same subject, if you have a car with a fiberglass body, or don’t want an antenna visible on your car, the answer is NOT to stick it on the underside of the car. I wish I had a camera to take a picture of coaxial going out the window and disappearing somewhere underneath a car going down hwy 16.

just make it look like part of the car. Take off the radio antenna and put the magmount over the spot where the radio antenna was. Magmount Yagi antennas on the front in a configuration that looks like a brush bar. Put a circular waveguide right beside the exhaust pipe, so that it looks like you have dual exhausts. I mean, sure; you could take an easier way and put the antenna inside the vehicle, but what's the fun in that?

If you own a Crown Vic in the states just add a few more dummy antennas and look like an unmarked leo.

Another important point is that if you use an omni antenna without a groundplane (that's a metal disk below the "aerial" bit of the antanna) you must stick it on metal, with at least half a metre of metal surrounding it in each direction. If you use a groundplane, you can stick it on anything.

I myself have a mag mount stuck to the iron plate in my skull. I have it disquised as a dorky rotor cap. More images of this, posted by others, can be seen by searching around a little.

Ya know G8t, I have one of those. I really do. My wife and son gave it to me one year. I wear it when thinking of particularly difficut geek issues.

Otherwise it just stays on my skull...

(The propeller is a bit washed out, but you can see it.)
