Yeah this won't get abused: Netgear MR814

One of the setup options.

Sheesh... Got an FCC ID on the unit ? Then forward that picture and the FCC ID to the FCC by email, with a CC to Netgear, and ask if this is the right way to ensure that units keep within regulations. Could be interesting to see if they actually enforce the regulations.

It's probably legal as it has all the right stamps:
Certifications:
- FCC Part 15, Class B (PD5LMWP200)
- Canada RSS-210 (3970104534A)
- UL, CSA
- CE

What I do question is that you can set it to something other then the US and still have the WEP encryption set to 128bit. I thought >40bit was could not be transported outside the US.

I'm going to have to investigate this further.

That may depend on what firmware it passed the FCC with...

edit:

2. Model: LM-WP200 and MA404 rev.B are identical, except brand name and model number.

Ooops!

Hmm.. Haven't seen one unit yet, ETSI or world wide capable, that didn't include 128 bit WEP.
Are you sure that WEP > 40 bit (and WPA) are covered by the non-export clause ?

The only time I ever witnessed anything about export restrictions and WEP or WPA was when I downloaded the Cisco client manager and drivers. To be honest, I cant remember what it said (either way, I downloaded them). I'll have a look see if my setup is still current, if not I'll download the new stuff and see what it says.

Country Code

My WG511 driver on loading on a virgin machine asked for a country location as well.

Didn't try to see if it choked on anything other than US though.

One of Clintons final acts was to lift the restrictions on crypto export. Codes still have to be 'approved' but the key size does'nt really matter (except for the usual suspects. Syria, Iran, N. Korea, Cuba, etc).

So long as the algorithm is approved for export, you don't need to worry about key size.

Or something like that

This is interesting...

Once you click ok you're free to change it to any channel of your choosing without ever being bothered again.

I decided to do some research:

I fired up Kismet and changed the channel and something quite peculiar happened. While the router is changing the channel it also briefly changes the SSID! With each change Kismet saw the router with SSID of "First" before it got re-initialized to its actual SSID of 'Pining' (yes my other AP is named fjords)

Interesting.
