Having Trouble with Garmin GPS 18

Postby carl@gd » Tue Aug 14, 2007 1:55 pm

I need some advice from someone who has used this with NetStumbler.

Using a Garmin GPS 18, with Garmin Spanner 2.1 already installed. I have tried several different COM Ports on Spanner already.

As soon as I start NetStumbler, the GPS begins timing out.

Also, are you guys using the nRoute software that came with the GPS Unit for mapping the APs?

Thanks in advance.

One more point. The GPS 18 only times out when NS finds new APs.

Garmin uses a proprietary GPS format that NetStumbler won't understand.

Does your unit support GPS output in NMEA format? I remember a rumor a while back that they were only using their format and dropping NMEA support.

It's no rumor. Any newer Garmin units are useless with NS (or any NMEA compliant programs and equipment) for that reason.

The new Delorme unit offers both serial and USB. Now I just have to save up the scratch to get one...
