Gps position is way out

Postby Gen13 » Sat Oct 04, 2003 1:46 pm

Hi there

Im using NS with a Belkin 54G and Haicom GPS serial mouse,
Windows XP

the setting for the GPS options is set on NMEA0183

and I have notice that when I turn the GPS on the position is is way out in NS its reading N51'52.9030 W0.215848

My readout should be this N51'31.XXXX W000'12.XXXX
(from my gps software which is correct)

anything to fix this error??

Look in the GPS manual, and make sure the serial output is the same as the readout. Both should be set to NAD83. It sounds like the serial output is set to NAD27 or other odd co-ordinate system.

N51'31.XXXX W000'12.XXXX, huh? Geez, you must be able to through a rock and hit the Royal Observatory at Greenwich.

Thanks for you quick response Thorn.

There is no software that comes with my GPS unit to control the GPS with so I cant change anything it just suppose to work thru the RS232 port.

I have a street navigator program works fine with it set to WGS84
protocol.

maybe the next version of NS will have WGS84 protocol in its GPS settings for all us GPS mouse users?

or do you have anymore suggestions that I should try??

:D unless that rock is laser guided and has rocket attached.

I dont think I can throw a rock 11 miles

I had a similar prob
mine was down to units measurement
you are probable set to "hddd.mm.mmm"
were if you were using a paper map you would be
"hddd.mm'ss.s"
this setting was in my GPs and not XP

thanks for putting me on the right track

I checked my gps unit using VisualGPS utility program

and checked my postiton format which was set to hddd.mm'ss.s

I change it to DDD.DDDDDDDD' and saw that the numbers were

same as netstumbler's postion readings.

So there isnt anything wrong at all just that I was expecting

the format to be in ddd.mm.sss instead of ddd.dddddddd'

oh joy!!

now lets hope they will add a format setting to the next version

of stumbler

thanks for all your help

You're welcome. Sorry it wasn't right.

11 miles is a hell of a lot closer than my 3000+. :)
