Interpreting the Colors

Postby earthbased » Sun Jan 11, 2004 2:27 pm

Netstumbler detected a peer wireless and showed as Red as opposed to Green as APs are shown. Are these indicators right?

The SNR was in purple; is this right?

The strangest thing is that the SNR stayed at -90 and the connection at 54Mbps everywhere I walked in a 7 floor apartment building. Can anyone explain this? A 54Mbps peer that hand out a public address?

Wrong.

RTFM the FAQ thread. It is all explained in detail. Which is, of course, why we have a FAQ thread in the first place.
http://forums.netstumbler.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1797

Briefly:
Signal = Green
Noise = Red
Loss of Signal = Purple

Signal - Noise = SNR

Signal, Noise and SNR are all measured in dBm (deciBels milliwatt.)

SNR has NOTHING to do with Ad Hoc vs. AP WLANs. If none of this makes much sense, get a good book on RF theory, search Google for some beginner pages, or buy a local Ham a beer.

BTW, this IS A REALLY BAD IDEA.

It means you are actually connecting someone's to the network. If you don't have permission, you are probably breaking several laws. If this is inadvertant on your part, then disable TCP/IP and all other networking protocols to avoid the problem in the future.

If this is deliberate on your part, you may not wish to disclose it on a public forum where you IP address is logged. Additionally, bandwidth (or other) theft is not well tolerated here.

Honestly now... i feel your pain haveing to deal with "ignorant" people. and by that i mean, not knowing what their doing. your above statement could have been worded in a slightly less offensive way and still convay your anger or distaste for what has happened. i know for some people it's the only way to get the message through, but other attempts should be made first.

Jesus H. Christ. Get a goddamned computer that knows how to find dictionary.com, dumbass! Not to mention the fact that stumbling gets enough bad press with the dipshits that drive around with their pants down around their ankles checking out pr0n on laptops (hmm, where was that again?), we don't need stupid fucks around here and if you stick around long enough, you'll get sick of it too. If the flames are too much for your delicate-self to handle, fuck-off.

Did I ever say I was going to use the connection? No. I just wanted to know why NS should show these stats and the wireless card utility showed Excellent Link at 54 Mbps. Can anyone explain this?

The point is that you ARE using the connection if you are obtaining an IP address. If you don't want to commit a crime, then you should stop it. If you are intentionally commiting a crime, then this is about the last place you should be discussing it.
=============================================

As to your question: Your information does not make any sense. The SNR was at -90dBm? Signal maybe; Noise probably; but it's very unlikely that the reading was the SNR.

Again: Signal - Noise = SNR eg: -75 - -95 = 20

What each of the readings? Signal, Noise and SNR. Read my first post on this thread and the FAQs if you still are confused as to which one is which.

Care Bears? Now that's disturbing.

Come to think of it, knowing what they are is even more disturbing. Drinks on me!
