Linksys, XP and weird things...

Postby catdog » Wed Sep 04, 2002 12:11 pm

I have an IBM 240X laptop with Windows XP Pro and a Linksys WPC11 2.5 wi-fi pc-card.

I installed netstumbler and the following things happened:

The first time I installed I received an error message about not being to overwrite a certain file (sorry, no install log available). I unloaded the Linksys software from memory (and AVG antivirus) and reinstalled, this time without problems.

I loaded the program and it showed me my MAC address and a connection graph. It shows two devices:

Instant Wireless Network PC Card V2.5 Prism 2, and
Instant Wireless Network PC Card V2.5 NDIS 5.1

Although I could see a graph showing I was connected, I was unable to browse the internet. I decided to restart my system.

At this point, I noticed the following: I had Stand-By and Hybernate options available from my Shutdown menu. These options had been unavailable and I haven't been able to figure why I cannot set my laptop on Stand-By. Anyway, now Stand-By worked - I tried it.

I rebooted the computer and now NetStumbler could not detect a valid card and the Stand-By and Hibernate options were gone from my Shutdown menu.

I removed the Linksys software and reinstalled the card drivers. The laptop connected to the network and NetStumbler could again see a valid card and show a connection graph.

Any comments?

Any ideas as to why I'm unable to activate the Stand-By and Hibernate functions on my laptop?

Which wi-fi card would you recommend for use with Windows XP and netstumbling software? Would you recommend a laptop with an embeded wi-fi system or is an external (PC Card) system better?

I've noticed that most stumbling programs do not support Linksys cards.

Thanks for any tips and info.

I had the same problem, but I seemed to have resolved it by uninstalling netstumbler and the linksys configuration software, then reinstalling netstumbler first, then reinstalling the linksys software.

Linksys Configuration Software

Postby FreakyMonkey » Tue Apr 01, 2003 1:58 pm

I'm currently successfully running NS 0330 on:

Compaq Armada E500
Linksys WPC11 v2.5
Windows XP Professional

Here's my resolution:

Download latest drivers from Linksys
Extract the drivers into a 'known' directory
Uninstall All Linksys software
Uninstall Card Driver
Remove the Card
Restart the System <IMPORTANT STEP>
Insert the card - When Windows asks for the driver point it to the Windows XP sub-folder in the 'known' directory.
Open the Network control panel
Properties of the WPC11
Set it to: Let Windows Manage my wireless connections (or somesuch).
Install NS 0330

woot.

Agreed, I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 (850 Mhz, 320 RAM), with a Linksys WPC11 V4, and if you simply download the new drivers, all works perfect in NS!

For now, support is flaky at best. Blackwave started a good "post your succesful configurations here" thread, it's just unfortunate that these ideas are now rejected.

it might work, it might not. It might work now and stop tommorrow. Etc, Etc.
all good ends all
