Strange Findings

Postby Guest » Wed Apr 03, 2002 9:58 am

I was out Stumbling and cam across about 20 AP's being
used by a hotel, not strange in itself but what happend
next is.

After NS found all 20 AP's/BSSID's/Name's/Channels/Etc
I noticed that the channels they were using were changing
every second. I saw all AP's go thru all 13 channels in
a few minutes. I thought this was strange so I started up
SnifferPro 4.7 and could only pickup the signals from my
equip.

I Then thought that maybe these AP's were not DSSS but
maybe FHSS, as they were changing channels very fast
and I didnt get any net packets from them, however I read
in the forums that NS doesn't work with or find FHSS equip. So just what the heck are they using ??????

Setup is NS running with a Lucent Gold Card.

I have seen this as well. i think may be it is a 3com thing. they have in there ap's the ability to select a frequency automatically when an area gets to crowded.

now maybe because there is 20 AP's and the signal from all of the ap's are making a mess with the network they are automatically changing all the time to find an empty area. but they then repeat the whole process again due to another Accesspoint jumping onto the same frequency close buy and causing to much noise.

Rechecked the NS log file, all 20 cam in as being made
by Z-COM, does this help?

It calls channel hopping and is used by many higher priced AP's.
I bet they have Breezecom hardware :-)))

Original Breezecom hardware was developed exclusively for the Israeli Army. Breezcom has it's main Office in Israel.
It is very good stuff....actualy the best. :-)))

The older, more expensive, Breezecom stuff is 802.11 compliant FHSS and reportedly not detectable using NS with a DSSS lucent card.

As for it's quality - let's just say I remain, well, unimpressed.

I installed some Breezecom networks and i am impressed. The largest wireless networks world wide running with Breezecom.
I also got some technical training from Breezecom (and Proxim) with some "inside" view.
The AP's are better then many other on the market. The configuration is far more complex and you have to know what you are doing, otherwise you kill the ROM :-)))

As mentioned above, Netstumbler WILL NOT detect FHSS
networks, and most certainly not with a DSSS lucent gold
card...

if u can kill the ROM just by messing up the config , then the equipment has some serious problems. (possibly with the design itself).

It looks like Breezecom is now Alvarion.
