GPS on USB port

Postby azuretech » Wed Nov 26, 2003 2:02 am

Is there a way to get NS to work with a GPS connected to a USB port? My laptop doesn't have a plain old serial port, just USB.

If not, any plans to add USB GPS support in the future?

(Need to figure if I should put the GPS on my Christmas list or not)

YMMV but I have run 2 GPS units via a USB at the same time on a laptop, connecting to a serial to USB adapter.

Its not a problem of connecting the GPS to my notebooks USB connector, I can do that no problem... The problem I have is, NetStumbler is limited to just reading GPS from a COM port, and as far as I can tell, cannot read GPS from a USB port.

Or does a Serial to USB adapter emulate a COM port? I have no idea there, as I just buy USB peripherals, and so never had to use an adapter.

http://www.duntemann.com/wifi/wardrivingfaq.htm

In that FAQ it discusses using a software "bridge" that assigns the input from a USB GPS to a com port so that it works with Netstumbler.

Check it out!
