I've noticed that Linksys uses a Vx.x to tell you what kind of prism chip that you have. So a v2.5 would be a prism2.5 chip. Netstumbler however sees everything that is 2 and up as a prism 2. My prism 3 card showed up as a prism 2.

I'm working with WinXP Pro and a IBM High Rate Wireless LAN MiniPCI Combo Card with a Prism 2.5, and it works nicely :)
Thanks alot for that.
In the device configuration I can choose between Prism 2 and NDIS 5.1, though I get a "System cannot find the given path" when I choose NDIS.

Where do you set the NDIS or Prism option in NS?

response by Aladdin_Sane: See my screen shot above but for me with the linksys wusb11 it's in the device drop down.

As a followup to my previous posting, I called linksys who said that the new wusb11 v2.6 had improvements in the signal strengh characteristics. I returned my v2.5 and exchanged it for the v2.6, and lo and behold, I can walk almost 250' line of site and still get a reasonable signale (v2.5 was only around 100').

Unfortunately, NS no longer recognizes the wusb11 v2.6. The "Instant Wireless USB Network Adapter v.2.6 Prism 2" shows up under device but it is greyed out...

Linksys, XP and weird things...

Postby catdog » Wed Sep 04, 2002 11:16 am

I have an IBM 240X laptop with Windows XP Pro and a Linksys WPC11 2.5 wi-fi pc-card.

I installed netstumbler and the following things happened:

The first time I installed I received an error message about not being to overwrite a certain file (sorry, no install log available). I unloaded the Linksys software from memory (and AVG antivirus) and reinstalled, this time without problems.

I loaded the program and it showed me my MAC address and a connection graph. It shows two devices:

Instant Wireless Network PC Card V2.5 Prism 2, and
Instant Wireless Network PC Card V2.5 NDIS 5.1

Although I could see a graph showing I was connected, I was unable to browse the internet. I decided to restart my system.

At this point, I noticed the following: I had Stand-By and Hybernate options available from my Shutdown menu. These options had been unavailable and I haven't been able to figure why I cannot set my laptop on Stand-By. Anyway, now Stand-By worked - I tried it.

I rebooted the computer and now NetStumbler could not detect a valid card and the Stand-By and Hibernate options were gone from my Shutdown menu.

I removed the Linksys software and reinstalled the card drivers. The laptop connected to the network and NetStumbler could again see a valid card and show a connection graph.

Any comments?

Any ideas as to why I'm unable to activate the Stand-By and Hibernate functions on my laptop?

Which wi-fi card would you recommend for use with Windows XP and netstumbling software? Would you recommend a laptop with an embeded wi-fi system or is an external (PC Card) system better?

I've noticed that most stumbling programs do not support Linksys cards.

Thanks for any tips and info.
