Questions and configuration information about the NetStumbler software

Postby CyberSp00k » Thu Oct 27, 2005 4:15 pm

Last weekend the family went on an excursion from White Bear Lake to Lincoln NE and back. While sitting in the car, waiting for my wife to visit a quilt shop, I fired up NetStumbler to see what might be around. The location was Windom MN, a farming community out in the middle of the plains. Of course there was the ubiquitous "linksys" but there was also "!Zaphod" ("bang Zaphod", in case you don't know that particular term for the "!"). The juxtaposition of the SSID and the feed store is way too peculiar not to share. Here's a photo of the location (thanks for the editorial help, Streaker :) )

I've seen some really funny ones.

The "{insert name} is gay." Makes me laugh too.

I've notice a lot of chain stores use their name, store number or a combination of both.

The local Home Depot is called "Orange". I was there today and I realized almost all their stuff is wireless. Explains why I picked up 8 SSIDs at the same time.

I'm new to this whole wardriving thing. It's interesting to say to the least. 60% of the routers I pick up have no encryption. And a ton, with or without encryption, have the default names as the SSID. I can only assume that the router password is still the default. First, I never realized how many wifi users were around. It sounded like a ping pong game going on.

BTW, I started with a "laptop" computer that the keyboard clipped into the monitor. As big as a full sized tower. No hard drive. 8 inch monochrome screen, 2 5.25 floppies. Boot up with dos disk, wait, switch disks out, run command line, play horrible games.

It's amazing that I'm typing on a machine that is 8lbs that has 300 times the power+ of a machine that used to fill up a room.

SOP, I have over 500 oranges in my logs. I can always tell when I'm getting near civilization again or what's on the other side of the treeline when the screen fills up with "Agent" Orange.

How stupid of a statement is that? You think a company worth billions and with hundreds of stores has only one IT guy? Of course they have an SOP to follow as any company with an intelligent IT department has. Otherwise there would be chaos on their network.

The "Geeksquad, GotHacked and I'm Insecure" would be tempting targets just to jack with.. but I know better..
