McDonalds WiFi going free

Postby renderman » Fri Dec 18, 2009 10:51 am

Slashdot Mobile Story | US McDonald's Wi-Fi Going Free In January

Reported everywhere, McDonalds is dropping the paywall for thier WiFi service. Doesn't appear to even be a requirement to buy something.

Hmmm, free Wifi = No crypto, no need to purchase = lots of freeloaders

I get the feeling that McDonalds are going to get alot more interesting in the near future.

Might be fun to go sniff the waves after this happens. Just to watch the traffic.

There's one about three quarters of a mile from my house. Wonder if my supertanna will see it? Hmm. Something to do this weekend!!

Hahahaha as I was reading this, I myself was thinking the same thing basically.. Then see your post sayin almost exactly what I was thinking:eek: . I have a McDonalds about a quarter mile down the road from me... Line of sight from a tree in my front yard...

This changes nothing for me, I've had free access to their wifi since I am an AT&T dsl customer... BUT I simply don't use public wifi... Hell I BARELY use my own wifi as it is...

Yea, same here, well I'm on Verizon now, but my wife is still on att..... I probably have a faster internet connection than McD's, but it would be interesting to see what I can see.

I had used it ONCE to test a friends wifi card to make absolutely sure that it worked. My router at the time died due to lightning  so I had no wifi myself. I went in and used my ATT login and was online within seconds. They seem to throttle the connection either very heavily or it max's at 1 meg because that was all I can pull... My dsl is 3 megs downstream due to my loop length. Even though my line stats WILL do 6 meg they won't let me get it based purely on my address.

I am curious as to what and IF I can see anything at this distance.... Or even what hardware to get *CHEAP* if what I have doesn't or won't work as I am out of season at my paintball field which is one of my main sources of income...

Would a WRT54G running DD-WRT micro have any possibilities of doing this? The only way to have any line of sight is to stick something in a pear tree in my front yard... Even then I wouldn't want to leave it out there long, I live in the city and believe there's a good chance of it being stolen pretty quick... After all Rockford is a classy place  (by that I mean shithole) ... And not a chance of me getting up on the roof.. Too much snow and ice...

I got the old laptop back from Vanessa. I will be putting another distro of Linux on it. So it might be interesting to go get some coffee between the holidays and scan the air. Time to pull out my BT adapter as well. :)

dd-wrt should have the capability to monitor wifi. A few of us have had kismet running on them. If you hack up a poe adapter for it, you should be able to get it high enough in the tree to keep the neighbor kids from stealing it. I don't think we have to worry about lightning for the next few months.

Hmmm - it's a shame this is only for January. There is a McDonalds at the foot of the hill at the Wardman Park Marriott. Imagine the fun we could have during breakfast there!

I have a McDonalds close by but since I am not that fond of their food, I may just keep going to Panera Bread where they have always had free Wifi (plus bagels, soups and sandwiches, etc.)

It's not for January, it starts in January. So it'll still be free in February and beyond.

They got forced into it I suspect... down in Houston I know of 4-5 BurgerKings that have free wifi (no restrictions, you can surf porn) and I know of a Denny's on 1960 in north Houston that has free wifi, (although you have to open their page to start a session and it lasts 30 minutes you have to reload the page to renew... but its free)

One manager of a BK told me he is seeing more business people coming in since its low cost food..

Course my ATF wifi spot is still CoffeeGroundz in downtown Houston (2 AP's lots of signal, BEER, good nibbles, coffee, BEER, indoor and out door sitting, BEER, lots of power plugs, and right across from the main Spec's liquor warehouse which has a Deli.)

Sounds good, but do they have beer?
