Does anyone have any documentation on how to properly set up a dual homed network in Windows XP?
Example:
NIC1 - DHCP
NIC2 - Static IP
Let DHCP server manage NIC1
Open up Control Panel > Network Connections
Click on Advanced > Advanced Settings
Set NIC1 to the top of the Bind Connections List
Now here's the trick
Set NIC2 with a static IP and DO NOT SET A Default Gateway, leave it blank
Now it will dual-home.
If you set a gateway windows will happily try to use NIC2 to communicate through even if it's a seperate subnet and you'll lose connectivity. What a pain the arse. The best part is a client has seen it work with gateways and then suddenly for no reason, sometimes months later it will stop working. Remove the gateway on NIC2 and it works, flawlessly.
