Got me a NAS box the other day

Postby Starpoint » Fri Oct 16, 2009 4:55 am

Bought me a Dlink DNS 323 nas box the other day. Has a gig ethernet, web interface, FTP server, DDNS client, Bittorrent client, and holds 2 x 3.5 sata drives.
Its Very small.. about the size of 1/2 loaf of bread, requires NO tools to install the drives.

Does not seem to allow AD permissions but for adding a storage device to your lan its VERY nice..

It also has a USB print server in it tool.

Yes, it will do RAID 0,1 and JBOB no tools needed, the front cover slides up and then pops off. The HD's fit snugly in their bays.

it comes with backup software for windows and is very quiet, has email alerts for over temp, capacity etc....

What is nice is its size... take a loaf of bread and remove half.

They make a 4 bay version the 34x series but those chassis cost around 350 and this one set me back around 152 with tax from Fry's.

What kind of large file transfer speeds are you getting across your lan?
Biggest problem I've found with most NAS is they are really slow when moving large files across network.

Enlight 5-bay Hot-swap module for SATA 2/SAS (BEIGE) - eBay (item 260467845957 end time Nov-23-09 15:32:16 PST)

Picked this up for the redqueen, it has a u320 cage in it now. Figured this would be the cheapest way to increase space, and lessen the number of drives I have. Now I just need a cheap 3ware or lsilogic sas/sata card. Actually lsilogic acquired 3ware, so 3ware branded controllers, you should be able to get at a discount.

I hate Windows Server 2008, it has very picky hardware requirements. Right now I can only run it as a vm.
