HP ProLiant DL145 G2 Dual Opteron 248 2.2GHz 1GB 80GB 1U Server w/Video & Dual GbLAN - No Operating System HP ProLiant DL145

I bought 2 one will be the new firewall and the other along with a 750GB drive I picked up will be the new NAS/WEB/Bittorrent server. For $90.00 you can't beat it.
I bought two of those Dec 31. One was slightly dinged, the bracket for attaching to the where it attaches to the rack was bent, and the screw holder is damaged. A hammer and some J.B. Weld should fix it.

The biggest problem is the depth of them. I hadn't realized they're 28 inches deep, and my deepest rack is only 24". :( Now I have to get a new rack. :)

Oh crap. Called home and had my cabinet measured. It's short too but the back is open so I'm hoping maybe it'll fit.

Hey! Watch it buddy. My rack is plenty big enough. Besides my rack fits ;) and it's a prettier shade of blue, along with the smoked glass, brushed aluminum and black accents. Of course mine isn't really a server cabinet but an old vibration monitoring equipment cabinet. However it was free and it's in great shape.

Oh I measured the cabinet and the servers should fit withouth hitting the wall behind :)

I have a 24" rack here at the office and all my servers are deeper than that. I end up modifying all my rackrails so that I can squeeze them in. A couple of them I've had to drill out the rear bracket on the rail and have them welded back on at the correct spot.

All this talk about racks, I am surprised G8t hasn't shown up yet.

Have some extra Opterons laying around if anyone needs them. Will also have an PCI-X 133 Intel srcu42x SCSI Raid controller as soon as I do my upgrade.

ah.. Beak, I work for HP repairing servers... so you are on your own with this one.. heheh..
if you are looking for a NAS, look at a Dlink DNS 323 ( or 343) the diff in the models are the 323 and 343 is drive capacity, the 323 is a 2 drive system the 343 is a 4 drive.
its basic, solid, I run one as my ftp server, has a gig nic.

other brands are out there but no OS needed is what I like about it.

its small and very lower power.

All the machines I have are mounted on rails
You could do the same, screw it down in the front and let the back hang out.
The bad part about a 1u case is lack drive space.

Since these are refurb and they have "no operating system" I was curious as to what a data recovery program might find or are they bare drives also.

Good question, I had the same thought myself. My suspicion is that since the drives are 80GB -the correct vintage for servers 3-4 years old- that they are the OEM drives. If they are the OEM units there should be some data on them, unless Geeks or the original owner used DBAN or a similar program. If it was a simple format or erase, there should be some data/OS.

I plan to try some recovery when I get some time, but the last two weeks I've been trying to drain the swamp while up to my ass in alligators.
