VMWare Question

Postby xor » Sat Jan 23, 2010 2:03 pm

Anyone ever migrate workstation vm's to esxi vm's.

I have the standalone converter from vmware, but I'm getting the idea that my esxi server needs to be setup first, then the conversion needs to happen. With all this stuff on the same computer, and me about to switch storage hardware it's a little confusing.

I've already moved the workstation vm's to a separate hd, might move them to a use drive too.

So my question is, have you done this before, and does my logic make sense. If you have performed this, how was the outcome? Was it ok, or do you wish you had just started from scratch?

I'm also going to have to RTMF on the vmware converter tool.

Yea, you can use converter to convert to an external hard drive, then move the vm to the esxi later. Test it first!!!! Make sure the vm will boot!
Never do anything you don't want to explain to the paramedics.

Hmm, maybe I should take my Freenas box and turn it into a ESXI box?

Reading on what this ESXi does. It would be nice to have the server be able to more then one thing. I'm thinking freenas/apache/playground.

Is that how it works? You install esxi then you install your other OSssssss onto it as virtual machines?

hmm, reading up freens in esxi not such a good idea
