What is this thing?

One of my friends called me up and sent me this picture of this obscure piece of obsolete technology. No one seems to be able to figure out what it is. The really odd thing is it has a 6 pin RJ connector on it. There's no tags or anything on it either.

It looks like it has 4 7segment LED's in it, and if it's a 6 conductor RJ connector it probably has something to do with a phone system. Possibly an internal "caller-id" device, something that indicates the inbound extension calling your desk. Maybe a helldesk device that indicates number of mad as hell callers in queue.

Oh man, we had one that would beep over the PA system whenever someone was on hold at the first place I worked at.

What really confused me is it looks like there are also decimal places built into the display.

Tear it apart, see what's inside.

There may be. Most so-called "7-segment" LED numeric display chips have the decimal point built in. Even if it never gets used, it's there.

It does not look like what used to come with an ATT internal 2400 baud modem. They had a model that used a 6 pin RJ that would lead to an LED bar that you would stick on the front side of the pc. The light bar was the lights you would see on an EXTERNAL modem.

It's a dangerous business, going out on the web.

The TSA doesn't tolerate jokes like that even outside of the airport. They'll be at your place any minute. It's best to go along quietly.

That was a typo, on my keyboard the N and the P are side by side. :)

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

So the Amish still haven't caught up to real qwerty keyboards?

It's a keyboard of Amish design, made out of wood and baling wire.

It's serial numerical display

Streaker has a RPN keyboard, just like his calculator.
