SF Bay Area/Silicon Valley/East Bay?

Postby AutoNiN » Fri Jan 24, 2003 8:23 pm

I saw the "NorCal" post awhile back, but really - that's a lot of territory (you could probably throw like 20 Connecticuts in there or something ;) ), and I noted the posters talked a lot about Sac, Santa Rosa, etc.

I really can't make it out that far, but I drive from East Bay to South Bay and back every day for work, wardriving the whole way. I know of a few people in the Concord/Dublin corridor that war drive as well (w00t! to the TVSG'ers - - anyone else want to hook up sometime?

As for my personal experiences so far on my commute:

Got some interesting hits going over I-580 overpass - I think the Livermore Weigh-Station uses WiFi = SSID livermoreeb ("East Bound"?).

Got some other hits driving by LLNL and Sandia - I *really* hope those are actually the houses across the street, and not the labs.

Bunch more hits down in Fremont along Mission Blvd - lots of nice $1M homes there, all Wi-fi'd up the wazzo. Rich people seem to love it.

Finally there's the obligatory hits in front of Nortel and NetGear. You'd have to wonder if you DIDN'T get hits there whether your set up was working or not.

I've been considering a drive down Tasman, but in order to get good hits, I'd have to do drive-bys in the parking lots. I think Cisco Security (oxymoron, I know, but that's what they call it) might get suspicious after the 25th or so building. It still might be fun. ;)

Anway - any East Bay/South Bay types want to compare captures?

I've picked up quite a few driving down Tasman through Ciscoville. There are also a lot in the housing complexes around the Great Mall.

Stumbling in Orange County

Postby dialbat » Thu Feb 06, 2003 12:22 pm

I love it!!!
Got my laptop, Orinoco Gold, Netstumbler and a cup of coffee. Just cruzzin through Irvine and Newport Beach neighborhoods gives you soo many APs it's not even funny. Just driving on Culver between 405 and 5 gave me at lease 30 AP and only 4 of them were locked :) So i'm just trying to hold myself from abusing the power :)
Hey guys, what happened to quiry page, that allowed you to see all the marked maps, it seems like its been down for a while?

Are you using an external antenna or the built in antenna? If it is external, which one? I am going to buy an external antenna but would like to find out what others are using sucessfully first. Thanks

No, i'm just using build in one. But i'm thinking getting an external antena, once i get myself more familiar with them :)
The whole thing reminds me of how we use to scan phones. When first 900MHz phones came out, they had no encription, we use to take the phone with us, and drive around the town, and push scan button. As it finds nearest phone, its a long distance heaven :)
well, we grown out of it now :)

Make sure you join in the next WorldWide Wardrive for Orange County. I was part of the first one (I happened to be in the area even though I live in AZ). You'll meet some great people.

For an external antenna, I use the external mag-mount 5 db from Fab-Corp. (If you order it, make sure you mention the 'Stumbler Special). Many here use it and find it to be great.

As you drive around OC you'll find the air *THICK* with AP's. A quick drive around on my last visit in January found 300 in about a 20 mile drive.

If you check the OTHER STUMBLERS section, I think you'll find quite a few other OC stumblers.

Have fun!
