For the time being, I'm just building a couple of identical 'tennas, one for myself, and one for another friend of mine. Further along, I do plan on building variants.
What I'm building now:
(2) 18 x 1.25" PVC housed directionals, for mobile purposes.

What I'm planning next:
(1) 36 x 3" PVC housed directional, boom mounted on my porch.
Some design of mag-mount or window-clamp mount omni-directional for my car.

June 15th Cinci Meeting

Postby OhioWarDriving » Tue May 21, 2002 9:00 am

15th looks good for me.

I just need a definite time/place to show up.

Let me know.

I will bring all my gear, etc.

Let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

I will post a meeting note on my web site this weekend, when I make my latest updates.

15th looks good here too..

hell I spent hours at home depot lowes over the last 3 weeks getting pvc to fix plumbing in a house I am fixing up. And I guess I was not seeing the tree through the forest. ahah I should have picked up a few extra feet of the lightweight stuff to make one. DOH!

It's easy to get sidetracked by real life problems and projects. Home Depot and Auto Zone are two of my greatest suppliers of computer accoutrements for case modding, etc... Same stuff you'd find on PC-Mods or Virtual Hideout, sometimes at half the price. And as far as having to do a little extra work to make things from scratch, that's at least half the fun of it.

There are hotspots literally all over town. A few months ago, I emailed OWD a file with a few hundred APs in it (did you ever find the time to convert and post the map?).
It's been a while since I made a run, but I'm willing to share my datafile with you guys. Nail down a date, time, and place and I'll try to show up...

I was planning on driving around downtown soon and doing a scan. I just received my 5dbi magmount from fab-corp with the pigtail, but the pigtail had a piece broken on it so I am waiting to here something back on a replacement.

I am using a ipaq 3650 w/pcmcia adapter and the Orinoco gold card. Still looking for more software for it, but it it one sweet device. I see you said you keep your unit in your pocket. I keep mine in the carying case and I put the inside door handle through the beltloop holder right next to the driver windows, its above the metal and I can get at it quickly (may or may not be an option for you).

(back, after about a month hiatus!)
I drove every street downtown in Feb; that same day I did a lap around UC. It's hard to not have your computer go nuts in those areas - coverage is pretty much constant. Basically everything on that run was in the clear, except for the APs run by UC.

I'm using an old Dell notebook (iPaq doesn't want to cooperate!), w/ a Garmin eMap. My rebadged Orinoco card is fed via a HyperlinkTech 3db mobile antenna that I hacked a magmount for. I'd love to change the magmount for something that bolts onto a roof rack - it'll look much more professional and attract less attention...

Like I mentioned in the Cincy meet thread, I'm game if you wanna compare .ns1 files. I've done chunks of the city from Fairfield to Newport and Milford to Harrison. I've missed the Beechmont area completely, along with most of the areas north of it.

Spanner What kind of problems are you having with your e-map and iPAQ? I've got mine playing together nicely, perhaps I can help?

Basically, it loses it's connection with any wireless card that's been inserted. You can surf, stumble, etc. for a random amount of time, then nothing. Ministumbler will spit up one of the error messages that says that the driver is not loaded, and it's reset time.
I've tried different drivers, different cards (Orinoco and Cisco), different card backs, and even upgraded the OS all to no avail.
I think it's a hardware issue - my boss had this problem as well. Ended up having to send the iPaq back 3 times before it was fixed. Since the office paid for it, I'm not too worried about it - I can fit more MP3s on the notebook, plus it's the system I use to plot the datapoints I get before I xfer them to the map I've got on my wall.
It just _loves_ my eMap! No problems with it at all. In fact, you just reminded me that there's probably another firmware update available for the eMap....

Spanner...

I will most definately share files with you once I get a gps unit. I really want a 24 meg unit and am debating on the dash mounted Garmin or one of the 8 meg hand held units..

I got lots of hits tooling around town (Cincy), plus I stumbled Newport Several times.

I wonder how many pple, have stumbled past me while war driving... heheh

Biggest problem I've run into, is knowing where I've been.
On streets with AP it's not a real problem, but where they aren't it can be a problem.

I've not gone out on any serious drives yet, so it's just a matter of a few streets difference on my way home from work. When I go out for the serious mapping runs, I'm bringing my Nav officer and R.I.O., and we'll have a distinct set route plan on paper maps, a single omni-dir high gain, and two directionals running. We should end up being able to cover max territory in minimal time with few re-runs of streets.

My solution was to order a map of the county (free!) from the County Engineer's office . It's about 3'x4' unfolded. Pick up a 3'x4' corkboard and some map pins from your local office supply store, and mount the map on the corkboard! You can then put the SSID on flags that are stuck in at the location you picked the AP up, and you can use a highlighter to trace your route. I pre-plan routes and have them with me when I drive, and mark any deviations as I go. Total cost was about $40 (I think. It's been a while), and I ended up with a great conversation piece hanging on a wall.

I got an eMap because I could use it for other things (GeoCaching besides wardriving, and because it's easy to conceal. There's a patch of Velcro stuck to the back of the unit, and a corresponding one stuck to my dash that'll place the unit where I can read it easily.

If you see a purple RAV4 w/ an extra, stubby antenna, it's probably me. I'll only look like that for another week or so, 'cause I'm changing cars soon.

Ohio War Driving

Postby OhioWarDriving » Tue May 28, 2002 5:56 pm

Fellow Ohio War Drivers,

I made a few maps this holiday weekend that I am going to put on my site. Before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone else wanted to submit their logs to me?

Send me your logs, I will make maps of your War Driving Adventures, and give credit for the effort, where credit is due.

Thanks,

Hope to hear from all Ohio War Drivers lurking out there!!
