AFAIK, the only diff is which channels are allowed. here is a list of
the freq's in the various regulatory domains:

Hi.. I'm from The Netherlands and I'm just starting stumbling.. Didn't buy a GPS yet, antenna's on it's way and I have an Avaya (Orinoco branded) silver card that's enabled for all 14 channels possible (packaging contained a warning that this card is _NOT ALLOWED_ in most european countries, but heck, who'll check for a mobile user with a wifi card that mostly won't even use the forbidden 14th frequency...
Anyway, I'd like to get in contact with the people who've actually done some stumbling using GPS here in Europe..
By the way, this is an interesting site with some wardriving results here in The Netherlands, at http://www.veteransmc.com/wireless.htm (scroll down a little bit to get a list of some dutch cities and provinces that have been checked)
btw, this site ain't up all the time ;/ so retry from time to time if you don't manage to get on it...

--UPDATE--

July 28th 2002:
Bought a Garmin E-trex GPS with Garmin serial cable. They are on their way from Fry's... Also, the antenna arrived and the pigtail is presumed to be on it's way (no confirmation yet), both from FAB... Hope to get all of it by the end of the week. Also still waiting for my 12v DC to 20v DC power convertor from Gericom (manufactor of my laptop) so the serious long-drive wardrives can commence...

The basic rule in EuroLand is that all 14 channels can be used but there are exceptions in France (of course :) ), Italy, Luxembourg & The Netherlands.

In The Netherlands, when used outdoors, only channels 9, 10 & 11 may be used and users must obtain a licence from the Rijksdienst voor Radiocommunicatie.

In France, it's even better. Only channels 10 & 11 may be used, even indoors, and outdoor use is only permitted on private areas. Naturally, all users need a licence from the Autorité de Régulation des Télécommunications.

sparafina,
Fozzy_wozzy_woo is in the Netherlands. He hasn't been on the board much lately, though. You might want to PM him.

I'd like to suggest a NetStumbler combined stumble database. This can be done easily by providing NS1 files to one person, who imports them into the existing database and then redistributes them... Because we don't have that much use for a 25+ MB database of the USA or other places in the world, our own NS database would be nice. If anyone would like to contribute please send your .NS1 files to
carnager2 <AT> sdvanime <DOT> com
Once we get some entries I'll start redistribution. If people agree, the non-contributors can get the NS1 file too...

PS. If you have a large database I suggest you pkzip / winzip it. The only format to submit in is .NS1

If admins think this should become a seperate, new thread, please state this and I'll be happy to oblige ;]

Hmm.. Can't wait to get my stuff.. Anyways, I'll go wardriving alot in the Northern part of The Netherlands.. Once the GPS and the external antenna are connected (see 4 or so posts above) wardriving will be much more rewarding I think ;] Now, with a laptop muffled away on the backseat the response ain't that good.. Also, no actual coordinates, so you'll have to remember by time and location and look them up afterward.. But since my stuff is ordered it won't be long before this way of working will be obsolete.. ;]

Oh by the way, Dutch people, also check this older thread:

Here are the results of a quick wardrive I did in town, with only the laptop on it's battery and the wireless card of orinoco. No external antenna, no GPS. Thus, the map is improvised, but it will do for now. Next week when I get my gear I'll do a more serious and longer wardrive in town, amongst other places.. Anyway, the pics resulting from that will also be posted on this site:

And now in English for the Dutch impared interested in this experience..

Today I went wardriving all around the Dutch city of Amsterdam. It was the first big wardrive I did and it was well worth it! In about 3½ hours I drove a part of Amsterdam, it came up with 260 accesspoints. I used Orinoco (avaya) pcmcia card, fab-corp 5dBi magmount antenna and a garmin e-trex gps. It's really a great experience! At the Amsterdam Internet Exchange, the biggest Dutch internet traffic get-together, a uncapped internet connection is offered by Sara. (also check http://wlan.sdvanime.com ) ...
Real fun!! :D
If anyone wants to trade or have my results NS1 files let me know. I'm mostly interested in European scans. ;]

OT but I cant resist.

I had the opportunity to visit Holland for 2 weeks last November. All I can say is that you guys really have your priorities sorted out and really know how to live life :)

I enjoyed everything there!! Even ate that damn raw herring. The herring was OK but the onions did me in.

I don't know, haven't been there, if it's not the name of a place in Amsterdam... And I guess it's not -> it's a town isn't it...

By the way, what's also fun, with netstumbler on highest scanspeed, I even stumbled on several networks in businessparks along the highway (where driving speed is 120KM/h (74.4Miles/h)

It's a resort in Holland (http://www.vvvnoordwijk.nl/). I've looked in travel books and doesn't sound very interesting, just corporate.

Ah, I see, small town on the beach, like zandvoort and such.. Well, haven't been there and I live up north so I don't think I'll be wardriving there any time soon.. If you get the chance check out Amsterdam. In a walk around the Waag building on Nieuwmarkt square, I received 5 different accesspoints. I think you can almost receive wireless signals everywhere in the inner part of the city center...
I came along a number of accesspoints with WEP encryption named 'monitoring'... They're from the camera's mounted on street corners on the buildings. You can see a antenna on them very similar to the design of fab-corp's 5dBi magmount omni.

By the way sparafina, where are you from? ;]

Unfortunately, I don't have time to spend in Amsterdam, although I have always enjoyed my stays in your city. I'll send you a .ns1 file after my trip.
