Most often (for the hobbyist) it is about trying different setups. Any (almost) dimwit can go out and buy off the shelf hardware and wardrive. Which are you?

That's the exact same laptop I gave to a family member when he was promoted to a new job at a university (he's a prof now) back in.... 1996?

That thing is so cool. His has 16MB of ram and a 1GB HDD.

I've since then given him a P4 1.7 Compaq 2800T. :D
