Google ads vs. search box

Postby 3dafx » Fri Mar 25, 2005 1:04 pm

I would have searched for this but I can't see the search box.

When I click on the search link the box pops under the "Ads By Google" ad box.

I tried logging out and logging back in.
Closed and re-opened IE.
Cleared temp files and cookies.
Restarted Windblow$.
Danced on one foot while rubbing my belly and patting my head and singing " I'm a little teapot".

Nothing seems to work. When I get home [ @ work now ], I will try it out on IE 6 and Firefox, and post a screen shot.

This machine is running IE 5.00, any ideas?

You're gonna hate me for this.. But oh well.

Ideas? Yeah, use a browser that was written in this century.

Upgrade IE to at least 5.5, prefereably 6.0. DHTML support in 5.0 is severely lacking.

Since there's a browser thread open, maybe someone can answer me this one.

On this forum, if I'm in edit and I use any of the buttons at the top to put tags around any text, about 50% of the time my browser crashes. It happens on multiple machines, all running WinXP sp2 with all the most recent service packs and patches as well as the most recent version of Java RunTime.

Anyone else experience this?

Yeah, it's the Java Runtime in combination with IE. The same thing happened with a client's brand new laptop. When we switched him over to Firefox, and used that Java script, it worked fine.

Sorry, I had a wreaker call and I didn't get to finish my post.

Anyway I wanted to suggest or request putting a search box on the bottom of the page. I tried it on a different machine here at work and it seems to be related just to that machine. Oh well. :D

And this is something you want to admit on a PUBLIC forum? Much less this forum knowing who's on it?

The search box hides behind the Google ad in Opera 8.0 for Linux also. Reducing the text size to 70% moves it out from behind. It's on top in the Linux versions of Firefox and Mozilla.

I suggest the word "Search" be made larger or a different color, or otherwise emphasised, to auto-assist those with a physical or mental deficiency in locating it.

I don't like Javascript'd pages myself. I wouldn't mind seeing the Javascript go away in favor of plain old 100 percent html code.

I just registered for this forum. The activation url was full of =3D and =20 things that made it not work until I removed them all.

Hmmm, and 57,000+ other users had the same problem? I think not. Must be something on your machine that doesn't have standy, or maybe it's because you're running netstumber.

Oh and try writing any kind of forum software or webbased application in pure 100% HTML. It will never happen.

JavaScript as well as all the other dynamic web design languages are needed. Pure 100% html, we may as well be back using Netscape 1.0 under Window 3.11 in 1992.

No, netstumbler killed standby.

But why make functions dependant on Javascript that would otherwise be just fune in html. Does this forum cripple when Javascript is disabled or missing? Example: Many sites I've seen that have anto-submitting drop down menus, and no Submit button. Or even worse, the submit button is there, but it is to javasctript'ed, so clicking it does nothing. Before Javascript, these worked just fine in html. What about non-Windows and stripped down devices like pda's? (Ministumbler?) Some webmasters that think about this have made their sites cross-compatible so that everyone can access it without it crippling. Like, for example setting the Javascript'ed links and buttons with html as well. Like, why do some webmasters put Javascript'ed Submit buttons if they are almost useless for html-only users anyway?
