Download the airsnare.zip v 0.5.9 and install this first and then copy airsnare.exe v 0.6.3 over the airsnare.exe. I did the same thing by just getting the v0.6.3 only.:(

Why monitor wireless?

My first thought is why monitor wireless? I mean, you own the wire running out of the access point. Download ethereal for windows and watch the packets after they hit the wire. Free up your wireless card for your use!

Also, I'd think about the morality and legality of it. As a minimum, somehow notifying users that "We reserve the right to inspect network traffic to provide better service, improve security, and other purposes" would get around the "expectation of privacy" arguments. Where ever you invite the public to use the service, post a disclaimer - physical sign, captive web page, etc. Maybe using "FreeToUse -WeWatchPackets" as the SSID :).

Yea I understand Completely......I guess the word PUBLIC wasnt correct....Guess what i was trying to do was....have a "open" wireless network for anyone who would stumble across it...I would not advertize it.......but i would like to know when people where connected....maybe even limit banwith....i could care less what they where surfing ..as long as it was legit....kinda like putting up a antenna on your roof so your Indoor network will work better .......when they kick down the door....you say "hell i didnt know someone was connected to my wireless" isnt that private?"........point here is it isnt inconcivable that you could easly be connected to you neighbors network if you knew nothing about it... and both networks where default settings.......as stumblers we all know this.....guess i would like to experiment with some yagi's....check field strength......see the limitations of 2.5 gig..I love what Seattle and other cities are doing...in my town there are a few places.... i even think a park has free wireless connections......i invision the day when you drive down the road and have a solid wireless connection to the internet at neck breaking speeds (no pun)......thanks for the thoughts

I looked into setting up an "unadvertised" community wireless access point. Unfortunately my ISP's Terms & Condition prohibit sharing :(.

I started by searching for "Linux" and "Wireless access point" on google.

This article used FreeBSD to set up a home AP:
http://www.samag.com/documents/s=7121/sam0205a/sam0205a.htm

Here's an ambitious project to rebuild a commercial AP with a linux image: http://opensource.instant802.com/home.php.

Here's a great laundry list of links for Community Wireless resources: http://bengross.com/wireless.html.

SourceForge would also be a good place to look (their search engine is done or I'd post a few links).

Hey, do you know of any software to do captive web pages using Win32?

Supposedly MS was going to move the AP functions under windows: http://www.isp-planet.com/news/2002/msft_020502.html. I never heard of this being released.

Here's an article on use XP to bridge wireless & wired:
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/windows-xp-bridge.asp
It doesn't say anything about how you might use Internet Connection Sharing to do this.

Sadly, windows makes some things easy and others way too difficult.

Have you considered using the Linux Router Project or Linux Wireless Router Project? http://sourceforge.net/projects/lwrp/
Both are one-floppy, ready-to-use solutions.

Thanks a lot for the links. I'll have to check back when the Linux Wireless Router Projects gets underway.

Here's what I'm trying to do:

- Put up a public wireless network
- Allow clients to grab an IP through DHCP
- The first HTTP request will be redirected to a web page with an acceptable use policy, and other information. The user will be required to perhaps type in some information such as their name and E-Mail Address.
- After they do that, they are free to use the network.

I'm really not needing the capability to authenticate users at the time being, although it might be nice in the long term.

I'll probably be using a Win2k box with two network interfaces -- one for the Broadband Internet connection, the other with either an AP or a wireless NIC in ADHOC mode.

Does anyone else know of any Win32 software that will do such a thing?

Thanks!

Exactly what I'm looking for, but they have no plans to port to Win32, unfortunately.

Any other ideas?

Did you read my post on the new drivers for winxp on widnows update for orinoco basec hardware? Oh wait...you are on win2k..but the drivers might be there too. Um...it looks like the drivers have intorduced the infamous "apmode" to windows xp system and ICS might work with this software ap now. I don't have two wireless devices so i can't check out this functionality. Over and out.

By Win32 do you mean Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 2000? If you have a box running Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server or Windows 2003 Server then I might be able to help you set it up.

Did you get AirSnare going or did you give up? Just curious...
Thanks,
