Walmart

Went up to Walmart tonight and came up with a few SSID's of pi07490509x09 so I did a drive around the store and came up with 10 of them. I found out that these are those price scanners in the store where you run a product under the scanner and it gives you the price of it. I never really noticed until tonight that there is a small rubber ducky on the top of the scanner.

Just for fun

Hey There,

Just for fun, it would be nice to try and get the same software they run and an emulator for it...

Have you thought about asking WalMart if they are aware of this issue... tell them that terrorists might use it to do something or whatever it is saps believe...

Or hell, get a quick part time job for a day and see what you can find out.

I used to be one of the monkies working behind the sporting goods counter back in the days. The zapper guns you a referring to are called "Telexons". The cool thing about them was that they are all tied into WalMart's entire stock system. You can tell a customer what's on the shelves at any WalMart in the US with that thing. And you could blind your buddy with the laser bouncing off the little wiggly mirror.

So these things have been around since I was in high school and surely even before that. So they are about 15 years old. So I doubt they are using 802.11b. What you found must be a new system. They could be testing or already replacing the Telexon system.

Ya you could right be Mr White. I have been up there a few times past Wallyworld in the past and never got any hits on Netstumbler before. I might have to investigate it a bit more ad check the other Wallyworlds in the area and see if I hit anything. I did try drive around the one in Hermitage, PA but didn't get anything of course that was just a regular store and wasn't all that big compared to the Supercenter here. I too used to work there but only last a day. :) I went to the orientation and found the HR people treated you like you are some kind of retarded moron and I never went back. Assholes.. :)

Yes, WalMart is pure evil. (going waaay off topic here)

Where I grew up, the only jobs you got in high school was McDonald's or WalMart. I actually worked at 2 different Wallies in 2 different states. In Oklahoma during HS and in Minnesota after the Navy, during college.

You are correct in how they treat their employees. I always thought we were treated more like cattle instead of retards. The pay and bennefits are awful, even if you are managment. In the back or in the break room, there is a big sign that shows what the day's current stock price is. That was our altar upon which to worship our god the almighty dollar. When the number fell, we sacrificed more cows by cutting hours or finding bullshit reasons to fire someone. Sometimes we made people work off the clock. I'm fucking ashamed I was ever employed there.

I don't shop at wallyworld anymore. When I look at one, all I see is a handful of people in Arkansas, making billions by stepping on the necks and backs of millions of peasants and by forcing smaller businesses to close their doors. And anybody who promotes this buy buying WalMart stock, deserves a kick in the nuts. There's a lot of anti-WalMart sites out there in the internet. And for good reason.

When we filled out those stupid forms in the orientation she was treating us like we didn't know anything and really demeeded us, basically treated us like a year old. Unfortuately Wallyworld is the cheapest place in town to get groceries so the wife and I still shop there. I refuse to go to Save-A-Lot which is cheaper but the quality is next till nil and IGA well I never was found of them either as they are all dingy and grungy at the ones I have been at. The other two groceries chains in town Shop'N Save and Giant Eagle are just out our price range for our monthly groceries. Bah..

Hey There,

I know the hand held zappers are called Telxon... and I know they do work on a wireless link although I never did get to see if it was 802.11 anything. What about the price scanns that are attatched to the support beams through-out the store though? Are those made by the same company?

Hmm

those do run at 2.4ghz, they are running of symbol spectrum24 AP's They run 256bit WEP and yes what runs on them are those price checkers that are mounted to the pillars, also some of the newer price checker guns (not the texlon, those were a proprietary freq) also run on those AP's

The bad thing is though the network they are connected to has Both a login based Proxy and a hardware firewall which usually closes all the ports except the ones the 4690 Point Of Sale controller uses. Sooooo there would be no point in even trying :-)

Also while we're at it, you'll notice symbol AP's popping up from most grocery stores and department stores, these are usually based on the same topology, ie. even if you did crack the 256bit WEP youd still not get an internet connection.

I guarantee they aren't all hispanic. Back when I worked there, the monkies that mopped the floors overnight were fired, forced to quit, or transfered elsewhere. Then they contracted a group twice the size of the overnight maint-monkeys. They were all from different eastern European countries and barely spoke english. But then, who need people skills to buff a floor? They now had twice the workforce at a fraction of the cost. If they had hired a gagle of hispanics to do the job, someone would have bitched. But since they where "white-folk" everybody just went, "awwww Sergei wants to be an American. Isn't that cute?" I would bet my eyeballs that the store I used to work at was one that got raided.

Geeks always raise a stink about Gates and how much money he has made and the way he made it. Yet they still go get their cheesy-poofs, toilet paper, and other crap from Wal-Mart. 4 of the top 10 richest billionaires in the world have the last name of Walton and they didn't get that way by making old people say HI to you when you walk into their stores.

How many Microsoft products do you have in your home? Now count the products you bought from Wal-Mart. Bill Gates is a chump compared to the Waltons.

Bill Gates - 40.7 billion

Alice, Helen, Jim, and John Walton -16.5 each for a total of 66 billion.

Jesus I'll stop ranting now.

EDIT: Yo, mb..join the list! :D

from foxnews.com --

The arrests were made at stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

I am a current Walmart associate who also likes to war drive.
The WAP's you are finding are not for the Telxon system. The Telxons run at 900 Mhz and connect to a Unix based system that checks stock, orders, etc. The WAP's are situated throughout the store so that CSM's (the supervisors in red vests at the front over the cashiers) can approve overrides and do a number of other things with PocketPC type systems running Windows CE. It is also used in the tire and lube express area to check in and out customer's vehicles. They use a remote desktop connection into a Windows 2000 Server that runs the user interface. In the future they could be used to replace the Telxon system.
If you are in a store just look up to the roof and there will probably be grey boxes with two green lights and a long high gain white antenna (at least in the new stores, can probably find them in old stores too). These are used for the Telxon system.
As for the price checkers, the old ones (without the pretty color display, just a couple lines of green text) run off of the telxon system. I don't know about the new ones, i would assume they would work the same.
These WAP's are very locked down with at least 128bit encryption and firewalls with MAC filtering. It would be pretty much impossible to connect to these and even if you did you wouldn't be able to get the password into the Windows systems. (They don't even tell the CSM's, it enters the password automatically).

In response to the walmart link, here is a quote from the article:

"None of the people arrested were Wal-Mart employees hired by the company to work in its stores"

Walmart pays me $10/hr to push carts... maybe ya'll are just jealous?
