What is Group War Driving

Ok I know that some of you have been to group meetings. What is the best, most useful way to group War Drive?

Say loading 3 or 4 computers into a van and taking off?

Or playing follow the leader, with 4 or 5 cars chasing each other?

Or every one going their own way?

With 3 or 4 computers in a van and some directional antennas (one looking left, one right) it seems like you could cover a lot of ground quick, but do they just wind up picking up each other?

With playing follow the leader it seems like it would be a great way to check out that new antenna, is really worth buying. Or how about that new GPS, does the compass make a difference?

Of course if we're all just going to do our own thing, perhaps this forum is all we need.

Anyone with any real experience, they care to share?

I would probably guess that everyone would meet and chat for a few and pull out a map, or bring one up and everyone split up an area perhaps a block apart in maybe at least groups of 5, maybe even use ham or moto radios to communicate with each other and watch for smokey... then meet back up later on and everyone merge the ns1 data... maybe have dinner.. make antenna things, program software... etc...Q&A... mingle.. who knows... :) I remember the old bbs days, and the ham meets, people like to eat and stand on soapboxes and talk about things... those crazy humans. :)

I think the idea is to get as much coverage in the shortest amount of time. :)

Maybe one day stumblers in SoCal, OC will want to meet or something...

Thanks aFR, seems like I am stuck in the middle of the WUGs... about 100 mile apart from the closest one... I think the only thing I have been to concerning WiFi was the OC Hacking Summit ]I[ over here in Newport Beach / Irvine...

... and chances are the next place I will pop up will be DCX in LV. Aside from that haven't met many people who do this after hours.

:(

I haven't checked the latest list... but since the dc9 fiasco with the letter of depression it looks like a lot of things are changing.. they are actually going to try and get quality speakers that get paid for good information.. so it should be interesting. I have gone every year since dc3... I need to use up vacation time that just seems to pile up. I wonder how many 802.11b people will be out there.

Finally got my GPS cable from Hewlett Compaqard, so I'll be giving that a go on the way home from work today.
I also got all my MC plugs, N-connectors, and LMR wire for building my 'tennas. I had no luck in finding any of it in Cincinnati, so I ended up ordering from FAB-Corp online. I don't know price comparisons, so I can't comment there, but as for service; I ordered my stuff yesterday afternoon, and it arrived on the 9am FedEx truck this morning! ROCK!!!

let me know how your gps enabled stumble goes l0ckd0wn. I have not ordered my gps as of yet. I got sidetracked on a few other things I wanted to do.

I was in Lowes the other night and looked into some pcv and all I could find there was way to thick for my likes. I need to hit sears as I remember seeing cheaper thin wall pvc. One question I thought I read somehwere that the optimal diameter of the yagi was like 3-1/2 inched is that right or does it even matter?

Took me all of about 2 minutes to have the GPS hooked up and logging yesterday. No problems at all.

I was in Lowes the other night and looked into some pcv and all I could find there was way to thick for my likes. I need to hit sears as I remember seeing cheaper thin wall pvc.

I was in Home Depot last night, and they've got 1/4" wall, 10' sections of PVC (1.5" external dia.) for $2.95. I'll look up the spec's on the diameter of the antenna, but I'm pretty sure I've seen plans for one that used 1.0" internal dia. PVC. Hell, even if it does need to be 3.5", the pipe at Home Depot was around $6 for 10' of the large diameters.
The one thing that I can't seem to find around town is a set of LMR-100 crimpers. Everyone's got RG-6/58 crimps, and I found a nice replaceable die set at the Depot, but the only die set they had was .068, .214, .240. If anyone has a suggestion on electronics shops around Cinti, let me know please.

Have you talked to Graybar Electric? They're at 1022 West Eighth Street, 621-0600. I'm not sure if they have the crimpers, but a friend who does pentests for a living swears by them.

There's a map available here.

I tried all over town, called at least 15 shops. Most were even polite enough to suggest one of the other shops in town, (which for the most part, I had already tried, to no avail.) I just ended up ordering the interchangeable die crimps from FAB-Corp.
So now I've got everything done, except for the crimping.

Are you able to do RG-58 as well as LMR-100 now?
I might have to have a connector re-crimped on the end of my antenna cable. I'll know more as soon as I figure out exactly how I'm going to attach the antenna to a roof rail. Magmounts are cool, except when you've got a new car...

I'll have the LMR-100 crimpers by the end of today (6-4-02) or tomorrow. As far as a crimper collection goes, now I have RJ-45, RG-6/58, LMR-100 (.130 hex), RG-174 (.178 hex), and whatever the heck .068 hex is for (it's on the LMR-100 die). If you need a recrimp on an end, that shouldn't be a problem. If you need custom length or connector combos, I can build those, too. (Just need a few days lead time to order in the parts.)
