I really havent been up to Williamsburg to stumble around there.

I know Va beach is a breeding ground for open wireless networks.

I've been driving most of Williamsburg over the last week, and WM has by far the largest open network. I'm under the impression that it's for student use only of course, so I haven't connected to it. But if you're anywhere within a few blocks of any WM building, you'll pick it up. I've probably covered about a quarter to a third of Williamsburg, and found just shy of 1000 APs, most of which are open.

Moving to the Hampton Roads area in July, so I'll be starting my collection from scratch again. Anyone know of a converting program that takes the netstumbler file and exports the data into a *.csv file so I can import into an Excel spreadsheet? I currently, type my APs -- takes too damn long!

so i havent lived in VA for very long...im into music and consistently go to concerts to try and meet new people to familiarize myself with the area. My great new excitement at the moment is that i hold tickets to go see styx in Doswell at Paramount's king dominion for the 22nd. I ve been a styx fan for a while now, Their probably the best classic rock ive heard. Anywayz, what all this rambling comes down to is that im looking for some styx fans in the area...is anyone a styx fan and/or goin to that concert?

From what i understand W&M have started to lock down their wireless network by having students logging into their computers and grabbing their mac addresses. That was over a year ago and havent checked to see if they went with it. I wouldnt be surprised if they didnt

Im too cheap and just a poor college student to go get a gps for my laptop and start logging the access points i find :(

They probably do that. I mean, they have a huge pipe, i'm sure there's something in place to stop anyone from using it. But I don't know because I haven't tried to connect. I'll talk to one of my friends who goes there and see what I can figure out.

I'm poor now because of my computer purchases. I just ordered a 200 gig hard drive... and maxed out my credit card. It sucks being addicted. :(

What exactly does wardriving mean? Is it legal to access the AP without the owner's permission in Virginia?

WarDriving v. The benign act of locating and logging wireless access points while in motion.-blackwave (2002)

It isn't legal in any US state or commonwealth. Under Federal law, it is a felony. Under state laws it varies between misdemeanor and felony.

New Hampshire is often cited as an exception. Actually however, under NH state law there is a requirement of the owner to have some security in place before a crime can be proven, although "security" is undefined.

I see.....

Then, why are you all going around in Virginia scanning for open wireless networks? After mapping them, what is the next course of action?

Sorry for asking these strange questions, I'm a total n00b.

Some people do it as a hobby, some do it as a job function. (Network or security analysis for example.)

By the way, it's not just Virginia. Check out the WorldWide WarDrive at worldwidewardrive.org

Statistical analysis.

Some people can't see any point in this, but a lot people do things things that others have no interest in as an activity. Take stamp collecting, for example. I can't see any rhyme or reason for it, but if people like it, who am I to ask their motivation?
