Wow, this thread is getting long.

I just found that 2WIRE is using the Orinoco card, also. Thought I should mention that.

Cisco 340 / 350

There has been alot of posts on getting the Cisco Aironet cards to work with Netstumbler 0.3.0.30 . After answering several question on how to get it to work and several replys saying that it didn't I have managed to duplicate the issue.

I have 2 laptops both with Cisco cards Compaq 1650 (works) and an HP 5130 (which doesn't). I have tried both XP Home and XP pro, a clean install & and upgrade. It appears to be an issue the the PCMCIA drivers. The Compaq has th Texas Instruments pci-1131 cardbus controler where the HP has the Texas Instruments PCI-1420 cardbus controler.

The Compaq laptop will work with the XP default driver and the WildPackets driver. The HP will only work with the default xp driver.

I am looping for a better solution, and I'll keep you informed.

Q: What is the magical prismum card people keep refering to?

A: There is no prismum card. Nor is there a prisum, prizm, or prisim card. Prism refers to the chipset in a series of cards that are not supported by NetStumbler. These cards however, are supported by the ever popular Kismet software, which only runs on Linux variants.

Q: Is Prism support going to be built into the next version of NetStumbler?

A: Marius works for Avaya, which is a company that spun out of Lucent, the company that designed the original chipsets which are used in the Orinoco series cards which are by the way, supported by NetStumbler. In short, probably not.

AHAHAHAHAH... Oh man I'm so glad you're not my stock broker.

WOOOOO...

Q: It says on the NetStumbler site that my Linksys card is not supported! What gives?

A: If you have the latest version of NetStumbler and Windows XP, chances are your Linksys card (with the Prism chipset) will work. Make sure you are using the latest drivers either from Linksys or from Intersil, and that you are NOT running the Linksys configuration utility. Also, be sure to select the "NDIS 5.1" driver from the "Device" menu within Network Stumbler. If all else fails, buy an ORiNOCO Gold kit with the antenna for $150... isn't it about time you got an external antenna jack anyway?

Q: I have a number of different APs with the same SSID. I want to connect to a particular AP via NetStumbler. Can I force connection to a desired AP via NetStumbler?

A: No.

First, you cannot connect to any AP via NetStumbler, as NetStumber is NOT A CONNECTION MANAGER, AND DOES NOT CONNECT TO ANYTHING.

Secondly, no connection manager software that is compliant with the 802.11 Standard will force a connection to a particular AP. To do so would break ROAMING, a integral part of the 802.11 Standard.

There is a simple way to do this and to conform to the standard: Give different WLANs different SSIDs.
