AirCrack

Hello all,

I would like to know user opinions on AirCrack.

Before anyone says anything, The main reason I am asking this is just to get an Oppinion by this set of forums, as you guys tend to have higher expectations than most forums (Which is a good thing, dont worry. I have been to the AirCrack forums, and everyone there has a great thing to say about it; this is great, but I want a critical view of it.).

Anyway, I would like to know about a couple of key areas:

User friendliness- Does it have a really steep learning curve?

Interface- Is it easy to follow? Is it a "Windows"? All options Hidden behind all kinds of menus.

Reliablity- Does it do what it says it does? Can it really "crack a WEP key in a minute"?

I am asking this hoping for criticism of the program (Not me damnit...;) ) I am interested in perhaps hearing personal accounts of the program and maybe even what hardware was used. I am looking at this software as an alternative to Cain and Abel, a semi-Complex (To the novice) weave of all kinds of interesting sublets I will never use.

Thanks in advance for any feedback. Please, I am just asking those offering remarks to the program to post to this, as I am interested in THIS forums Opinion.

Thanks again

I have read the previous posts, and I have noticed that many dont believe in WEP cracking at all. more people tend to focus on "The big guns" Such as corporate networks. I am just here to learn, not crack, hack, or otherwise mutilate others property aside from my own. I beleieve it is nice to know these things and that they are out there, as currently I am troublshooting many PC's, many of which have issues with security and networking.
Thanks again

Aircrack-ptw generally works in about 2-3 minutes.

Not if you follow the instructions at http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php.

Aircrack is actually a series of tools, and they are command line tools. As far as I know there are no "menus" unless there is some GUI version that I'm not aware of.

Aircrack-ptw (also integrated as a separate attack within Aircrack-ng v0.9) generally takes about 2-3 minutes to crack 128 bit WEP (depending upon your injection rate).

Aircrack is a WEP (and WPA) cracker; C&A is much more, but also very different. I would not consider Aircrack as an "alternative" as they do very different things.

Normally, I'd say "define 'steep'", but if you think Cain and Abel is a 'semi-Complex' it probably is going to be very steep for you.

bitwire wrote:Interface- Is it easy to follow?
No, not if you are expecting pull-down menus.

bitwire wrote:Is it a "Windows"?
No. It is a command line interface that runs within what is known as a "console window." (Some people may also call this a "DOS window.) All the options are entered via the command line.

bitwire wrote:All options Hidden behind all kinds of menus.
There are NO menus.

bitwire wrote:Reliablity- Does it do what it says it does?
Yes.

bitwire wrote:Can it really "crack a WEP key in a minute"?
Yes.

Before you go any further, you might want to look over the documentation: http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=aircrack-ng

Hey Prez,

Thanks for the Input!

I am looking at the WEP cracking aspect only, as that is the only security here at my house. (I test everything here, just me, 7 PC's, and a WRT54G Linksys Router....Gotta love it!)

Thanks again,
Perhaps I may post again with a simple crack setup / WIFI finder kit.

Sorry, I am just now getting into the entire WarDriving/ Network knowlege aspect of PC's. It has been a rough run without Internet, as I have had none since I was young. Anyway, I will gladly take both Thorn's advice and The Prez'S TOO.

Thanks for the posts!

(I feel pretty dumb not knowing what all the advanced configurations for Cain and Abel, yet Since I have had only about two hours experience on it with a PC that Had an incompatible chipset, I suppose that my first view was a little overstated. I wil give it a medium level of tech? Sound good? :) )

Perchance anyone know of some good resources for the C & A, or did everyone learn it themselves? i have Looked at some you tube video's, but the quality was horrible, also, I tried reading material, but all the information was very scattered, requiring link after link, any help of leads to known info? It would be grately appreciated! Thanks again.

You might want to read our latest book. I wrote a section on aircrack-ng in the Windows chapter. Wardriving & Wireless Penetration Testing

For other information on WarDriving, the earlier book is probably better for a beginner: WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend, A Guide to Wireless Security

Hi,

Just reading the above, does the Aircrack PTW attack work under Windows? I have Linux running on a few machines just wondering had anyone cross compiled it. I know how to crack "WEPS" so I please don't take this as a freeloader like the one's we usually get round these parts
