Airmagnet rocks!

For those of you who downloaded the demo with skepticism, I have only positive things to say about the time I've spent with Airmagnet on my iPaq.

At this point it's earned me 2 wireless security audits, cut down my site survey times by about 1/3 (S/N ratio on a per channel basis rocks -- mini-spectrum analyzer, if you will) and it quickly and soundly identifies potential performance and security issues.

Perhaps I missed it somewhere, but with the sniffing functionality, the only thing lacking is the ability to decode/display the actual datagram payload -- I think this to be an issue with packet reassembly and limited memory.

I carry a 1 Gig Microdrive in my (pregnant) dual PC-Card expansion slot, so I wish I had the ability to spool decode to disk instead of flash so I could actually investigate the datagram.

All in all, however, it's an excellent tool. Support for additional cards is coming (they shipped the Proxim with the software) but I've yet to get a pigtail for connection to the 5dBi omni (the Proxim has the provision for such a hookup, nicely.)

At any rate, the statistics are first rate, the navigation is easy once you've used it now and then, and it's very user friendly.

1) American Express - never stumble without it.
2) $2500 (+S/H)
3) Only given our new mutual relationship via item (1) above.

Just to clarify, I purchased it. I have no connection with the company other than being a happy customer.

Regards,

Chris

Can you expand more on this:

Since the live capture of data packets requires the AirMagnet WLAN card

What can you tell us about the card. How is it AirMagnet specific?

Were you referencing me in the last post?

I don't use IRC.

Send me an email or private message if you want to chat.

It's a Proxim Harmony 8430 802.11b - HW Rev 1.0 F/W Rev. 0.7.6
... We don't have another Proxim (different MAC) to determine whether the code is specific to the card, but I can tell you that a Cisco Aironet 350, Orinico Gold and an SMC 2632W do not work with the unit.

More than likely, this is a chipset issue and not MAC locked.
We tried a proxim CF as opposed to the PC Card and it did not work.

Nice thing about the product is that it was developed by Dean Au who founded and developed an awsome sniffer called NetXRay for Cinco before the company was acquired by Network Solutions.

I would be surprised if Dean doesn't integrate packet sniffng into the product sometime in the near future.

I just picked up an iPaq running Airmagnet from my IS group. I'm planning to set it right next to my laptop running NS on the way home. To make things even, I won't connect an external antenna to my Orinoco card. I want to test out on distances and speeds which program will pick up more networks.

There was a guy here (McHale not to name him) who said you could flash any old PrismII card to get AirMagnet to work. Unfortunately he never followed on his offer to post the required "rom". I think he couldn't cover his tracks enough !

"There was a guy here (McHale not to name him) who said you could flash any old PrismII card to get AirMagnet to work."

- Like most things McHale mentions, this statement is wrong. The is a reason he never followed up with his claims. One of which, he has never sprung for the software. He's never purchased the solution to have a proving ground. Secondly, he would fail, regardless.

Nope

Nope.. it's not just the card. I have it.. legit since I've partnered with them for support :)

For those interested, I have an experiment in progress on my site. I plan to have several of these AVI files with details on how Airmagent works.

Feedback would be nice, the AVI file is compressed for a 200Kbps link. Anything slower and the quality suffers too badly.

I *might* try it also for a mini-tutorial of Netstumbler:D
