Well, there's a happy ending to every story.

ZyXEL still sells and supports ZyDAS-based sticks, and what do you know - drivers are available. You can find links over at InsanelyMac.

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=34071&hl=zydas

Of course you'll still have to follow the excellent instructions at the start of this thread if you, like me, have a different product and vendor ID.

What vi/emacs war? Everyone knows vi is superior.

Amen!

However, there are a lot of people who have old Macs repurposed as servers that can't take Apple's own (discontinued) AirPort 802.11b cards (or one can't afford the second-hand market ones), and in several markets you can't get other brands of USB sticks with proper drivers.

The ZyDAS-based sticks make sense as long as you can't get anything else and have have a machine that doesn't need to restart frequently - or sleep.

Mine finally worked great today with the latest drivers, and that was with TKIP/WPA encryption.

EDIT: Yes, I am aware of mail order and the availability of other drivers but they are usually just as finicky. Besides I got a ZyDAS-based stick as part of a router bundle.

Short: dabs.com.

My excellent Westell ADSL modem (400 plus simultaneous TCP/IP connections) didn't like Bulldog's ADSL 2+ hardware - go figure, forward compatibility was the reason I bought it - so I had to get something else quickly.

The 40-something pounds for my 3Com router including ZyDAS stick was good, and I must say the modem has performed admirably (against all expectations).

The USB stick itself is junk. However it now works as a nice backup for when Bulldog, sorry, Cable & Wireless decide to take a day off. Which happens frequently in Shoreditch, London.

Ahh, cool. Guess I won't have to worry about them then.

I know I might be pushing the Netstumbler line here; I use MacStumbler and KisMac, but does anybody have good recommendations for non-Apple hardware and drivers?
