NS finding AP with SSID broadcast disabled

My AP/Router is Dlink's 614+ and I'm using an XP machine with Dlink's 650+ card. With SSID broadcast disabled, NetStumbler can still find the AP as well as XP's built in wireless accessories. This occurs with WEP enabled and disabled. Now it seems that SSID broadcast is still enabled despite what the AP says. Anyone else have the same problem? Thanks.

?....?

If you have broadcasting turned off on the AP but have the SSID in your wireless connection profiles, it will still pick up the AP because you are essentially communicating with the AP still. Try taking out your wireless connection profiles and then run NS. If you have broadcasting turned off on the AP, it shouldnt pick it up anymore.

Beware, Microsoft XP client will try to "help" you find those APs that have broadcast disabled by sequentially searching for ALL the SSIDs that you've connected to. It's "helping" you.

It's possible that this is how stumbler is discovering the SSID.

Ok, thanks guys. Looks like I'll have to NS on another clean machine. Thanks again.

Could you shed some light on how to perform this? I'm using the IBM Access Connections for my wired, wireless, and dial-up profiles, and I thought this was the way to go. I use a Linksys WRT54GS and have disabled broadcasting my SSID, I filter by MAC address to permit my wireless host only, and use WEP-PSK /TKIP encryption. I also use Zone Alarm Pro as well as many anti-malware apps (the latter which, I know, has nothing to do with what's showing up in Netstumbler). Yet when I run Netstumbler, I can still see my MAC address, SSID, and WEP for encryption. Under Vendor, though, it shows mine as "Fake". Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chuck

What OS are you using? If XP is WZC disabled? Have you created a profile to use with NS?

I am running XP Pro, SP2. What do you mean by is WZC disabled? Also, what do you mean by creating a profile to use with NS? I created a profile to use with IBM Connections with my ThinkPad T42 for wired, wireless, and dial-up.

Thanks,

Chuck

Gee, thanks. You know, some of us may be newbies to this site, but not to others. And some of us are experts in our own right in different areas. If it is such a bother to answer my question, could I trouble you enough to reference what you "went through" in another thread? I did, by the way, go through this forum's search function and could not find the answer I was seeking, hence, the question. I suppose I could spend a few hours trying to track down this elusive thread, but I was hoping that someone would be nice enough to point me in the right direction.

Thanks(?)
Chuck

Drop the attitude... or enjoy a vacation from the site.

Read ALL the posts in the Welcome Desk section, taking particular note of the guide to the search function. Then try to put relevant keywords into your search..

"Drop the attitude"? Look, I asked for help, politely, and one of your members basically dismissed me with a, "I don't want to even give you a pointer to the answer, so find it on your own", response. If you don't have the cojones to see that, you're no better than him/her. I belong to a lot of other forums, I'm an IT security engineer, CISSP, and hold an M.S. in Network Security, so I'm not a casual, home user type of member. Yet this site seems to be very "closed". If this is how you treat "newbies", so be it, I'll close my account and move on to one that is more welcoming to new members. Enjoy your little, pathetic fiefdom here.

And you don't know how to turn off WZC?!! That come in a craker jack box or what. I'm a mac guy and know how to turn it off. The reason we give people a hard time about this crap is because it's asked like a billion times.

The search button is there for a reason. Use it.

And as for your credentials... I'm so impressed--- I've forgotten more about IT, than you ever are going to know, and I still know enough about that subject to be able to find out the stuff I don't remember, on my own, instead of expecting a spoonfeeding session.
That ability is one of the reasons I could retire before I was forty, and only do stuff for fun, such as holding seminars for the IT crimes group of the national police over here.

So don't let the door hit you on the way out, and please don't feel the urge to come back, before you are ready to do your own research.
