There's a README.HTML file with NS. Look there.

650 The system cannot find the path specified

Topgun, I have your same problem with Netstumbler errror
"The system cannot find the path specified".

You mention you were able to fix it. I could not find the thread that you said had the fix. Please share your expertise.

There are at least 2 different DWL-650 Air models that will work nicely with NS 3.30 on W2K. There is a DWL-650+ that does NOT work with NS. The later is likely the one you are struggling with. Sorry, this is likely bad news.

Go into regedit and change the image location for PCANDIS5.sys. Search for pcandis5.sys or change the image location directly. The location of the image location is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Services/PCANDIS5

Once there look at the imagepath. In my configuration (i.e. Windows XP) the imagepath should be \??\C:\winnt\system32\PCANDIS5.SYS

Obviously, if you have just a folder called Windows and not winnt just change the path for the folder that contains system32. I had some weird path but once I changed it to the above, I restarted my machine and NetStumbler started working.

Thanks Topgun

Thank you Topgun for your quick response. I've change the registry per your instruction. Have yet to try the new setting but I am sure it will work like you said it would. That is a weird default path.

Odd thing here is that I got NS 2 work with 650+ in My Dell laptop, and it worked, maybe not all functions, but enough....

One thing I can add tho, has anyone had problems getting the card recognised in XP? Comes up UNKNOWN_MANUFACTURER most of the time... rebooting or deserting/inserting the card picks it up... anyone got ideas here? Works fine in 98/ME... Oh, not in 2000 either.... yet the 520+ works in all of these...

Steve!

Popped the card in here, installed the drivers, opened NetStumbler. All worked well. Carried laptop outside, drove around a bit. Wnt to eat at a restaurant, shutdown the laptop.

When I turned it back on, NetStumbler wont use the 650+ anymore.

Glad its only a borrowed card.

:D

Even removing the card and reinsterting it didnt help.
Going to try total uninstall/reinstall.

Yes, found 13 APs, only 3 of them secured, one of them being mine.

I uninstalled Netstumbler, uninstalled the dlink card.
Reinstalled Netstumbler in safe mode.
This allowed it to overwrite a library file in the windows directory.

Reinstalled the dlink card and NOW it seems to survive reboots.

Dell Inspiron 2650
Windows XP w/ sp1
D-Link Air-Plus DWL-650+
:H/w: B1
:F/W: 1.9
Netstumbler 0.3.30
As I'm using NDIS 5.1, Netstumbler doesn't read the card info.
Dlink Driver Date: 6/5/2003
Dlink Driver Version: 3.0.23.4

Additionally, my Proxim Skyline 802.11a seems to work as well.
: Model 4030

To reiterate, this unsupported card works in my limited test scenerio after making sure that netstumbler could install all of its files, that none of the card manufacturer utility apps were being run before netstumbler, and using the latest manufacturer drivers.

I finally decided to give wireles a shot, and went with the D-Link DI-624 access point and a DWL-G650 AirPlus PCMCIA adapter on XP Pro. Here is my experience, briefly...

Access point + adapter were operating in the 'up to 54mbps mode'. A free firmware update for the access point and a new driver are available to double the throughput (in theory, I guess). My adapter is now using driver version 2.40 (XTreme 108 I think they call it).

I stumbled upon netstumbler, and thought I'd give it a peek. I only quickly scanned over the forums and Readme. I was a little unclear as to whether or my specific hardware configuration would work, but no harm in tinkering, and if it didn't... then I'd just buy something that is known to work and is officially supported, because wardriving sounded very interesting!

So, I installed NetStumbler and fired it up. Immediately it picked up my access point (unencrypted at the time!). The only columns left blank were name, vendor, latitude/ longitude. Graphs were working nicely. Just so happens that I needed to pick up a pizza about 15 miles away just as I was reading more of the Readme. So, I carried my Latitude with me!

As soon as I got out of the driveway, Net Stumbler alarmed me that it had detected an access point. Nice! I figured I just got lucky and wouldnt need to sink any additional money in to supported adapters and such. Suddenly, though, Net Stumbler closed. I tried firing it back up and nothing. Several more times, nothing.

Then rebooted my laptop, fired up Net Stumbler again. Yay its back up. BLAU! Another access point (by this time I was driving along side an air force base, they are running an Aironet access point ;) Same thing happened again. Net Stumbler crashed, it wouldnt come back up until after a reboot.

And well, that is pretty much where I left off with it. I perused the forums in search of answers. IMO you are better off going with something that is supported and proven. For $100 bucks sounds like you can get everything you need with minimal problems (external antenna + supported adapter).

So, my advice as a noob just getting in to wardriving, get something proven to work. Threads like this drive me up the WALL. It is UNSUPPORTED. If someone gets it working, great. Read what they have to say about how they made it work. If you can't find anything, you probably have not looked hard enough. If you STILL can't find anything, just remember... it is unsupported and you will save yourself some troubles by simply getting something that IS supported!

Blessed are the people that can read AND comprehend. They even check the README & SEARCH the forum on their own.

Ticker, welcome to the forum. :)

I loaded DWL-650+ drivers from their website. It is detecting the wireless network I'm on and three others which I don't know what they are. I'm not sure if this means it *works* or not.

I love the idea of stumbling. I have an E-125 which could probably run mini-stumbler, but it only has a CF port and from what I've read they don't make CF wireless cards that are netstumbler compatible.

I run pocket warrior on my Dell Axim because mini stumbler would not work for me. So you might try that. I use a Linksys WCF12 you can download PW at http://www.pocketwarrior.org

I have a dwl-ag650 and worked fine until I instaled the service pack 1 in XP, that is being discussed in the this other thread.
